George, the first gutters I bought at Payless Cashways and the second set at Sutherlands. I'm sorry, but I don't know the brands.

I haven't heard anyone mention Payless Cashways in a long time. There were two Payless Cashways very close to my house growing up. One is now a Wal Mart Neighborhood Market and the other is a Ford Dealership.

Yep, I used to do a lot of business with Payless Cashways and really liked them. But I think Home Depot and Lowe's put them out of business.

I had seamless gutters installed last summer. 50 ft front and 50 foot back, 4 downspouts. Got them with the gutter guard/capping. $1100. I think the gutters were $700 and the guards $400. And that's in NY. Your price sounds a little high for SC.

For one additional reference price (from south-central PA), I just had 96 feet of 5" seamless rolled off for $275. Included 3 pieces/3 12 foot downspouts and all the hangers. Now, I did hang it myself but only because of timing issues with some soffit work I had to finish. I could have had it all installed for an additional $75 if I had been ready when he was there.

Why have gutters at all?

They serve a purpose, but they also cause problems. I see them slapped up all the time in places where there is no point to them. They can be useful to get water away from a basement, or for certain other water issues.

But if you have no basement, why gutter?

I'm ripping them off my own house as I go. And I have a basement. But I'm aware of how I'm handling the water, which is the main issue.

Gutters move rainwater away from the house. You don't want water up against the house whether you have a basement or not. Excess water isn't good for slabs, foundation walls or crawl spaces.

In my case, the grade on the back of the house is flat. Water tends to stand and our soil holds a lot of water. Can see moisture in cinder block foundation walls when there has been a lot of rain. Could put in a french drain but as far as I am concerned that is a bigger pain than gutters.

On the front the grade slopes nicely away from the cabin and have not had gutters there yet. But, will be adding front stairs, a stoop and screening in the porch. Don't want roof runoff coming down on, or splattering these.
