Hey shop guys. Need help for a question brought up on the Lawn and Garden forum. I want to add electric start to my splitter so my dear one can help with the firewood. There was an older post that discussed the use of a hydraulic pump on a verticle shaft motor rather than the typical horizontal shaft. Has anyone seen this done? I think simple thoughts, but seems like it should work.

Thanks
T

Yeah, lots of splitters have vertical shaft engines. The hydraulic pump couldn't care less about it.

It will work. I assembled a Barnes 16gpm 2 stage pump tp the bottom of a B-S 11.5 hp motor and has worked fine for 8 years. You'll need the adapter that's used for horizontal engines and the appropriate lovejoy connectors for pump and engine shaft. I used the motor mount plate from the donor riding mower and welded brackets to it which centered the pump adapter to engine.

Thanks for the reply. Now to confiscate a mower. What do you mean by "the adapter that's used for horizontal mowers"? I have the lovejoy connector, but no other adapter.

The idea of using the mounting plate for the motor is great. I'll look at using it with the under hood tank and just put the hood back on to protect it all.

Thanks again

Just be sure to mount the tank high enough so the pump cannot be run dry. It only takes a little of that to ruin a pump.
