Like a root beer Dr. Pepper to me... I like it.

Me too, though IMHO it doesn't taste anything like Dr. Pepper. It does have a similar taste to home-made root beer (though not really much like the store stuff). According to my wife it tastes like old tires. I've never eaten a tire so I can't say. As someone else noted, it's one of those love it or hate it things.

Once upon a time there was a store in Lisbon that sold Moxie flavored ice cream. Is it still there? I'd heard it went out of business.

Soda, you either love or hate it.

It's only distributed in a handful of states, most if not all in the northeast.
Once upon a time the company that owned the brand was based in Atlanta (though AFAIK it wasn't available there), it was bought by a N.H. based company a few years ago.

Quick update. I leave for my Maine vacation Aug 16. I have been doing a lot of reading about all things Maine. I am very excited about the impending adventure. Looking forward to lots of lobster and sightseeing.

Maine has a bunch to offer and what you get depends on what you enjoy and where you go. If your stops are places like Wells, Ogunquit, Freeport, Camden, and Bar Harbor you'll see the tourist side. Mainers tend to avoid those places like the plague once tourists arrive. The coast has over 3500 miles of shoreline, and the river systems/forest access were the population draws that brought people here. Most communities do not have dozens of restaurants, gift shops, movie theaters, and outlet stores.
Tidal range differs in the river systems and shoreline, from single digit ranges in York, to over twenty foot swings Downeast. Quoddy Head would put you to the Easternmost point and offers incredible views. The harbors in Cutler, Jonesport and Deer Isle/Stonington are real working waterfronts with a rainbow of commercial vessels decorating the harbors.
If you do end up in Freeport the LL Bean store is interesting, Bucks Naked BBQ is delicious, and the Maine Beer Company is knocking it out of the park there. My sister lives there, so I'll endure that.
Besides lobster, theres haddock, clams, halibut and scallops that will be fresh. Fish and clam chowder, lobster stew... Can't forget the strawberries, blueberries and apples. Probably ought to have a potato, or at least some humpty dumpty BBQ chips. Besides Moxie, we also have Allens Coffee Brandy, which is a regional thing.
Cadillac Mountain, Mount Katahdin... gem mining in western Maine... the Desert of Maine... the Downeaster railway... whitewater rafting the Penobscot, Dead or Kennebec rivers...

My wife and I spent a long weekend there one time 25 years ago and loved it. You are making me want to go back real bad!

From Portland you can catch a tour boat of Casco Bay, very picturesque. Then to Cape Elizabeth to Two Lights visit the Clam Shack and eat lobster right on the shore. Rock land has a ferry to Vinalhaven Island, good place to have lunch-- you can walk it so leave your car in Rockland. Bar Harbor is fun, get an aerial tour of the coast. You can also do the aerial tour from Sanford, exit 19 off I-95.

The earlier warning about moose is for real. Their eyes do not reflect so they are virtually invisible after dark, beware.

moxie???? I just don't get it.. Maine is a beautiful place, anything you could want is there. Kennebunk is a fun touristy place with great food, if your looking more to relax the mountains are great too. Sunday River is always great year round. _enjoy the ride_

Moxie was as common as coke was in MA in the 80's, I kinda like it myself but I don't buy it very often.

I like Moxie with pizza and it taste best from the glass bottles but harder find that way. Moose will be a great site to see this time of year, better chance to see them in western Me. and I think moose season is coming up.

That is a nice trip. This fall or next year?

We were thinking 1st week November. We are not really into touristy things but do enjoy museums and seeing the countryside. The logging museum will be a must.

It will be getting fairly gray by then. FYI.

Are you saying gray is not a good color on Maine?

Great vacation. Maine is spectacular. Being it was our first time there, we did the touristy stuff. Spent 3 days in Bar Harbor, ate lots of lobster, worked our way back down the coast from Bar Harbor. Our favorite lobster shack was McLoons near Rockland. We didn't have a specific agenda, just drove around free lancing. I would definitely recommend it. If I go again, probably would go in early October to see the leaves but wouldn't want to go much later than that because of the cold. We were there the third week of August.
