I managed to get home early enough to get some primer shot on the cast iron.

At the end of the day, I find I need to change my compressor oil.. it's getting dark. Also.. I think it is finally time to retire the 9$ harbor freight spray gun.. I had to keep dinking with the syphon control to keep it spraying that last few minutes of painting. Looked at new chinese guns.. looks like I got to spens 20 - 30$ now to get a new one! Darn! That 9$ one ( on sale from 15$ back in 2000 ) has been a good gun. Cleaned meticulessly.. but just wore out now..

here's a sneak peak.

SG: nice work (so far). Looking forward to periodic updates and more (many more) photos documenting this restoration (or is a a refurbishment? A rennovation? Or something else?).

Getting ready to clean up my IH #8 Little Genius 2-14 plow.

Need to fire up the grit blaster once I get more walnut shell grit. Haven't used my $40 Harbor Freight HVLP sprayer since last summer when I repainted the 1964 MF-135. I'll be interesting to see if that thing still works.

I love that plow.

I think I'm gonna call this one a ?refurbishment? It will be fully functional.. but I am not changing tires, and using 100% correct parts. I made the steering arm.. and the sheet metal is likely coming from a 900 not a 901 series.. Plus, this was a LPG machine.. so it was originally on propane and was converted to gas... since I'm leaving it that way.. can't see calling it a restoration as it will DEFFINATELY not be in factory condition when I'm done with it.

Well.. been raining alot here in the afternoon.. mostly killing my after work time.. but i did manage to get a flap and wire wheel and start onthe fenders on the 951. I spot checked them and found a few rust holes, and went ahead and put my first application of bondo on the holes, and then started buffing them down.. got about half of each fender done before I had to stop and jump to another task yesterday.

Picke dup a new (cheap) paint gun.. tried it out priming/painting the roof of my old 90' ford mini van that I have cargo-ed out. roof was badly rusted and I buffed it down to clean metal.. shot some primer and paint yesterday to try out the new gun before I used it on my tractor!

Maybee will get time to finish the fenders and prime them on friday...

I work a shift each day this weekend.. so i will probably ony get a couple hours a day to work on her for a while.

Soundguy, what did you do to prep the metal before priming?

I want to paint my 404 this summer but I don't care about parade tractor restorations. I bought it it use not to show. I just want it to look OK and stop the rust.

What's the sequence if I don't want to pull the whole thing down to small parts but I want the paint to last more than a year or so? The sheet metal I'll remove and prep like automotive panels. But what about all the castings and other parts?

It looks like a huge deal to strip them all to base metal...

The sheet metal I take to bare metal. lotsa ways.. like chemical strippers, then pressure wash.. then a 'black' 3m abrasive pad.. it takes rust and paint down to shiney metal. I then wash it with a water based solvent like purple power to remove any oil and degreaser... rinse, and towel dry and then set int he sun.. then wipe with a tack cloth.. then prime.. then paint.. following prime/paint recomendations.

On the cast.. I pressure wash well, and degrease..a nd pressure wash with water based solvent.. then wire wheel any palce with bad paint. I rarely strip the paint ont he castings unless it is bad.. if it is.. then a wire wheel.. or preferably.. a knotted wire cup.. it will take it to bare metal.. but it's a long job.. My work tractors i don't usually do.. onmy parade jobs.. yeah.. all down to metal.. frame and all.

Parts you don't want to seperate.. just mask off with clean release tape ( blue masking ) and contractors paper.. comes in rolls from places like lowes.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I thought.

I've done enough body work that the sheet metal work isn't scary. I know how to do that. I've just never worked with any parts that weren't prepped in that way. If the paint will hold up well enough on the castings for a work tractor without stripping to bare metal, and last a little while, it's good enough for me...

I've got 8yr old paint on my working tractors that was prepped just like I mentioned... so far so good. Key is getting down to something good for the primer to stick to... For a 100% job.. metal is best.. for a worker.. If you can at least get down to good old base paint that is sticking fine.. then for the cast iron.. that's pretty good.. sheet metal though.. always down to metal..

Got up early this AM, removed some more parts and then prepped for paint. got 3 quarts of ford red put oyut befor ethe wife had me stop to clean up to take her to lunch. hood center, medalion nose, and egg-crate pieces all got red, as well as the chassie. Turned out great. Had 2 small runs which i was able to 'spray out'. I'm still not used to this hvlp gun and the different paint thinning.

Got some parts I needed in the mail today as well.

Ran out of 3m abrasive pads so hit walmart ont he way home from work. Will probably start working on the hood-sides and doglegs come monday. they need to be buffed down, and then some body work to fix a rust hole on a dogleg, and then to purty-up a weld repair.

If I'm lucky, by next friday I may be shooting the ford medium grey on the hood and fenders.. depends on work schedule.
