Unique yard sculpture

My folks have been visiting with us for the past week. My Mom, always wanting to help out around the house, grabbed a bucket and headed to the front yard to spend some time dead-heading our roses. When she got to the gate, she stopped to admire a "unique yard sculpture". She was just about to swing the gate open when she saw the sculpture move. Needless to say.......

If I found it in my yard it would not move again. I know they are good mousers but so are cats.

I found his hole in the flower bed next to the house. Apparently, he's living in the crawl space. The picture was taken on Monday. I was under the house soldering some plumbing the previous day. I'm glad I didn't meet him under the house. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I would have knocked the house off its foundation trying to scramble up and out of there. NOT something I want to meet in a confined space.

What kind of "sculpture" is that? The close up shows a triangular head which I thought was poisonous. Do not recognize the pattern/markings at all.

I must agree with others, if found in my yard, it would not move again. I much prefer rat poison in the crawl space, garage, flower bed, etc. than one of those.

Hope your Mom is doing well.

He's just a plain old rat snake. Apparently they climb really well. He was seen climbing in the rose bushes as well as along the fence and gate.

Yep, rat snakes are super climbers. But they can be clumsy too. My wife was 'picking' a horse stall a few years ago & had just pushed the wheelbarrow out, when she heard a 'kerflop' behind her. A 5' rat snake fell out of the rafters right where she had been standing a moment before. It shook her up so much she called me at work - - not much I could do.
