What I have learned from this thread is how unoriginal the settlers of the United States were, at least compared to Tasmania. IMO of course.

Oh, don't get me wrong about un-original place name in Tassie. We've got plenty of those: Perth, Launceston, Devonport, Baghdad... heck, even St Helens.

Mid way on the East coast highway is the Wye River. Some local put up their own sign that reads, "Because it's bigger than a creek." :eek:ath:

That 'local' sign remains to this day.

I was looking at google map one night and it showed a small Lake called ****** Lake. About 15 miles from me. Never heard of it before and I'm guessing it was on a really big ranch by the Trinity River.

Discovered a couple more unique names today... from Canada!

"Push and Be Damned Rapids" in New Brunswick, and

"Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha!" in Quebec.

We are not far from Screw Creek, also in Victoria we have Speed, Brim, Smoko and also Wye River, further afield we have Texas and Roma.
When aboriginal names repeat such as our thriving metropolis of Lang Lang and Wagga Wagga (pronounced Wogga) it means it is near water.
In North East Victoria we have Colac Colac which is called Clack Clack.
The list goes on but I can't.

Greasy Creek is just over the hill from us. On the way to work (before I retired, that is) I used to have to drive It'll Do Road. Before buying this house we looked at one on Goat Ranch Road.

Fairy Dell, about 250km from us, nice area but I could not live in a place with a name like that.
Friends live on Red Shirt Gully Rd.
We also have an abundance of Back Creeks but no Front Creeks.

Oh, yeah, I forgot Buzzards Glory Road. And no, as usual, I'm not kidding.
