Tractor
Yanmar 1500D
.........and they are kind of related.

I have a Yanmar 1500D and the distance from side to side at the rear tires is 42". I have a 4' blade but have decided that I really need a box blade. I will probably reverse the rear wheels to make it wider at the rear. Should I get a 4' box blade or will my little Yanny handle a 5' box blade?

Second question. Has anyone ever thought of installing studs in place of the lug bolts for the rear wheels and using a rear weight as a spacer to move the wheels out instead of reversing them? Seems to me that would kill two birds with one stone and the air valve for the wheel would still face out.

Any thoughts before I ask my brother to fire up his lathe and turn me out a set of spacer/weights?

I would get the 4 foot box blade, I do not think that your tractor has enough traction to pull a full 5 foot box blade around. As for the studs I just do not know if it will work or not. The only thing I can think of is it might put enough stress on the axle to pull the threads out, but it sure sounds like a good idea. I wish I would have thought of it. If you try it let us know how it works out. I would like some studs and wheel weights if it does not cause any problems.

Q1 - I have a 4' blade but the total track of my rear tyres is slightly more than 4'.

I know the blade is supposed to be wider, and maybe that's why I can't get the hang of smoothing things out (Wheels will ride up on the non-smooth bits) but I don't think I'd have the grunt to push a 5' blade.

As it is now I run out of traction ALL THE TIME pushing this one.

Q2 - No idea but I have reversed mine and the valve stems on the inside is a pain !!

Cheers

Seems to me that tractor wheel manufactures would have caught on by now and installed valve stems on both sides.

Wonder how much trouble it would be to drill a hole and install a valve stem?

I work a 5' box with my ym1700.. but I have to keep the rpms up, and I do have the ag tires. I would guess a 4' box is about right for the 1500.

Rather than studs, I used longer bolts and ran them through the back side so I don't have to worry about stripping out the threads on the hub.
