TROYBILT TILLER OLDER HORSE

Newbie here, I just came in possession of an older Troybilt rototiller, I believe its called a "horse" . It starts, runs good, I put new tires on it, old tires where dry rotted. It was repainted so there are no decals. There is a serial number 520 541 . When I put it into gear it will not move, I noticed there are two pulleys and only one v-belt, does it require two v-belts ? Also the axle slides at least 1'' in both directions , stopping when the tire rim hits the gear housing . Is there a place to purchase repair parts , everything I search is for newer tillers. Old horse has 1 belt, Are you pulling down the engagement lever, this will begin spinning the tiller tines and then if in high or low range the tires should spin

Axle should not slide side to side.

There is one belt, two pulleys. It is a two speed depending on which pair of pulleys you have the belt on.

Probably missing the c clips on the axle if the axle shaft is sliding laterally. See pic I'm sharing from the parts manual.

From your serial number of 520541 it appears to be a Horse II made in 1981.

Sorry NH that doesn't sound right..?.

The 2 speed trans is actually gear selected
the selector slides on the pins in the diagram you posted.



the belt is basically used as a clutch/de clutch device and the pulley can drive the unit in reverse by driving the disc/pulley in a reverse direction when the belt is loose and the engagement lever raised.

Or did i completely miss is the trans actually capable of 4 speeds? 2 in the trans and 2 depending on belt pulley position??

if so i need to tell the new owner that it can actually be used at 4 different speeds

thanks that makes perfect sense, 2 reverses and the 2 forward shifted speeds + 2 ranges for forward using the second belt position

Thank you, I believe my problem is the axle , gonna replace the seals, retaining clips& washers. Hopefully this fixes it . Thanks for the reply!

Thank you for replying, I took a quick look and the c-clips are not there, gonna try to replace seals , clips, washers. Hopefully this fixes the problem. Thanks again !!!
