I gave up my apportioned tags 2 years ago as the documentation expectations were ridiculous for me. I dont travel out of state too much anymore and quite honestly, when I do deliver out of state, cops dont seem to care about farmers delivering hay.
Anyway, I have to travel from PA to NC. I will be traveling through MD, VA and into NC. The purpose of the trip is sort of a gray area IMO. I am going to NC empty to pick up a new trailer. On the return trip the trailer will be unloaded- NO cargo. Theres no profit in the trip. Although I guess one could reason it is tied to my companys profit system or some other mumbo jumbo legal nonsense.
The trip permit costs are pretty ridiculous.

I have heard an amazing range of cops wont care to youll be frog marched to jail regarding this trip.

Thoughts?

I say .....don't worry about it.
Enjoy the ride, and your new Kaufman trailer!

Assuming you have a bill of sale from the dealer and a temp tag on the trailer, you shouldn't be hassled. You are taking delivery of a new piece of equipment and hauling it home in a not-for-hire, not-paid, non-commercial manner.

Your eventual use of that trailer should be irrelevant.

My friend came down to Lexington and picked up his new Kaufman with no fuss or bother. 81 to 77, probably the same route you are taking.

How much are trip permits in PA?
The VA trip permit is $5 as long as you have insurance, if you don't you have to pay the uninsured motorist fee which is about $42 in addition to the $5 fee.

That’s interesting. I was told it would be in excess of $100 per state.....

Had another guy tell me to put tape over my DOT number?

Here's the VA trip permit info, I know your in PA so its irrelevant but interesting the differences. It says to contact any states your traveling through outside of VA.
I don't know why a state would make it difficult to get a trip permit.

As long as you're not loaded I think you'll be OK with bringing it back with just a bill of sale. Although I agree that covering your DOT numbers would be a good idea since you're not operating in a commercial manor.

Looks like anything over 26,000 has to have permits, so Im screwed

Know a car dealer you can borrow a truck/tag from? May be different in other states - but from my understanding, a dealer tag gets around lots of regulations. My friend keeps a dealer license for that alone.

Have you already purchased the trailer? If so you should be able to get the info and they'll send you the title or other info needed to register it. That way you can just take your tags with you and be done with it.

The trailer manufacturer has buyers picking up trailers every day. They should be well versed in the requirements for driving a new trailer off their property. I'd ask them what they recommend. When I bought mine, although from a dealer and only an hour from home, they gave me options. I chose a 30 day tag they sold there and only took a couple minutes to complete. I could have driven away with my bill of sale and no plates, but then I would have needed a separate trip to the DMV for plates before using it and I wanted to haul with it the next day. Those 30 day tags got me close to my b-day when I renewed my truck tags and got new trailer plates for a year.

Sure seems like this is the best idea.

I asked about that. Kaufman had no clue about permits. I dont know what the 30 day tag entitles me to.
I called a company called Transceivers. They specialize in trip & fuel permits.
They said I need SIX permits. One fuel and one trip for each of the 3 states. A mere $550. What a bargain.
They insist that since Im tagged over 26,000 (My tag is 43,000) I MUST have permits.
So cocktail napkin math is as follows: Permits $550, fuel $175, tolls (est) $100, hotel room $100. Thats $925. Then theres the wear & tear on driving my RAM 1,000 miles AND Mrs Hay Dude yacking in my ear for an estimated 14 hours of driving!
Even without getting ANY permits, Im at $475.
My alternative is to have trailer delivered for $850.

Thinking delivery is looking better with each passing day. One Or more downsides to delivery: Cant inspect trailer there and ask for repairs or tweaks to anything not exactly right and someone I dont know driving my new trailer 500 miles....

So now what....

Can you have it delivered?

I agree about the convenience of Dealer Tags... used one to pick up a vehicle in Virginia and drive it back to California...

Sadly the Dealership closed it's doors after more than 70 years... but it was great perk for sure and it is where I had my first real job washing all the cars on the lot starting at age 12...

Getting a Kaufmann I take it...

On springs or torsion axles. If it's on springs I suggest you weld on triangular gusset plates on the front are rear spring hangars where the hanger verticals are welded to the frame rails. Reason I say that is because if you haul at capacity like I do and negotiate any off road situations, the hangers will twist. Been there, did that and added gussets.

Whats your time worth? 850 delivered and not having to deal with the hassles is worth it to me. Although I do agree about being able to inspect before taking delivery.

That said, a lot of states have exceptions for transporting vehicles that were just purchased, you shouldn't need fuel permits to bring a just purchased empty trailer to your business from the factory. That seems kinda ridiculous to me.
