Trees--cut with \'Limminator or \'Terminator?

20060601

I searched and found some of you mentioned knowing someone who uses one of those with a Skid Steer or hefty tractor to cut small to medium trees. I've got a whole hillside of sight path to cut, mostly small cedars and playing Chainsaw Charlie is the pits.

Local dealer has a TreeLiminator that he will let me demo and if I buy it, give me one **** of a price on it. It uses a sawing technique but has limited ability to keep the tree from just flopping over, worries me a bit, though my loader has a FOPS.

My Bobcat salesman has a used jaw-chopper shear tool (17") similar to the TreeTerminator someone wrote about. More money but also a good deal. It grips the tree part the way up while the closing jaw cuts at the base, so most trees, certainly ones I should be messing with, will be secured and carry-able.

Getting up and down that hill will be the test, so a demo is essential to assess how safely I can do it.

Has anyone here used either of these, saw or shear, with tractor or Bobcat?

Thanks,

Jim

Re: Trees--cut with \'Limminator or \'Terminator?

I have no experience with either, but a little bit with trees. I don't think either one has much protection against a tree that falls toward the tractor. But you can avoid most of that by choosing which side of the tree to cut from. The wind can come up and set the tree back at any time. Had that happen once, pinched my saw. I got away from the tree into the woods, and started toward the house to get my other saw. The wind gusted and blew the tree down onto my log splitter. If I had walked straight away from the tree it would have driven me, like a fence post, into the ground. The expanded steel mat looks like it would limit the size of any limbs that would come through, but little ones can act just like spears on your soft, tender body. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Hey, good advice and a scary story. My BIL almost lost his life to falling limbs from a dead tree which he only bumped with a JD 5410. Trees'll gitcha.

My SSL is FOPS'd. And I am going to start doing some limbing before cutting these cedars down to make pulling the logs out easier. It's a hillside so we are prbly going to leave the brush there.

I was hoping for more comments/experiences on the TreeLiminator and TreeTerminator, wonder if it's just 'cause no one's used them....

But thanks for the comments,

Jim

Re: Trees--cut with \'Limminator or \'Terminator?

Hi, I have the “Tree Terminator II” rated at 5 inches with swivel option and brush guard. I can cut up to 8 inches by making two cuts, brush guard angles forward to help push tree in the direction you want it to fall. The swivel option is great for trimming limbs, just be careful when working overhead. I have been using terminator to clear small lake cutting overgrowth ground level. This is a well built heavy duty piece of equipment, would have like to have gone bigger but limited by tractor size, Kubota 3830. Good luck and if I can help let me know.

Joee, I looked at your model on the site and did not see it with the same kind of brush guard as on the Grande model. Pushing the tree fwd with the guard sounds interesting--could you post a picture of yours with the guard, in action wood(/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) be great!

BTW a salesman for the product called me Friday and is slated to bring one by our farm for a demo in the next couple of weeks. Did you buy yours that way or from a dealer?

Thanks
J
