Is this so the repair guys can make more money? Got you coming and going?

One thing about my air conditioner. The compressor still starts but leaks. After losing refrigerant, no cooling. The coil is cracked.
Air guy said can't get old refrigerant much longer. So ,"maybe we can fix it if can get parts." "Cost of fixing but stuck with having, later, no refrigerant . His thoughts, more cost effective to pack it in and get new one.???" I would think cracked coil could be fixed?
Air guy said could never buy new parts?

Just wondering........Coffeeman

Exactly..... My wife was there when air guy looked at.. I caught him when leaving. he said unrepairable. I know air guy. Did a furnace in a garage & office building few years ago. Seemed fair, but only had to install, not diagnose.. It was part of fire repair. He's a friend but not close . He has a good rep. Can it be fixed I asked? Can't get parts & refrigerant will soon be off market. So I said, "Order the air conditioner. That was Friday a 4 pm. Today, I was out all day. Home at 4;30. 81 degree in that area of house. 82 on car temp gauge in shade. On a whim at 5:45 I turned on air. Inside temp from 81 down to 78 in 2 hours 15 min. In shade outside 80 and sun is blasting. If would have been on all day it be cold in here.

I like the Air guy and I wonder how he made such a mistake?

Cheers...Coffeeman

They are worried about having to come back out if they don't quite get all the leaks with the silver solder. The labor kills the cost savings of just replacing with new.

Makes sense to me. Called "the guy" little while ago. He said cooling grid was aluminum. It is not easy to repair. I mentioned it's working now. He believes coolant will leak out again. How about stop leak, I said. If U want to try it costs about $80 for stuff. It doesn't usually work. "Let it run, we'll se what happens?" "Just call me when U ready". Sun is down and it's 73 degrees in here now, and going down.

I went to graduation party today. The graduate gave all Dads a lottery ticket, thanking them all for coming to party on holiday.
I ate good food, won a dollar on my ticket, spent time with friends, got more gifts from family, my air conditioner came back to life and the Air Guy says I might get a week or maybe real lucky and get the whole season...

Things are good today......happy Fathers Day......Coffeeman

He says refrigerant isn't available ? If it's R22, You can still buy it. If all else fails, Tell him to do what it takes to convert to R407C refrigerant

I agree. I always thought aluminum coils could be fixed? But, it's more difficult than copper? I just picture my Mahindra radiator leaking. Take it to radiator repair
shop. Back in and in business. Especially since the compressor works. Maybe not as easy as pie, though?

Thanks for info.......Coffeeman

Never tried to repair aluminum coil. I have repaired several copper ones and it can be difficult. Most I have found leak at the elbow bend right at the galvanized plate

Ever since they mandated the termination of R22 and went to 410A things have gone down hill . The higher pressures of 410A and the willingness to use cheaper materials has created a service nightmare. I just retired from the field and have found especially with minisplits that the heads are developing leaks within 1 to 3 years of installation. Doesn't matter the brand, they all seem to be susceptible. We've had the same issues with evaporators on split systems. Pick your poison because they all are being manufactured as cheap as humanly possible and they is a 50/50 chance you will have an issue.

Right on the money.. Friends air down . Service replaced electronic board. $500.00, took 1 hour...

Must be common occurrence , as he brought board with him. My refrigerator went down. Electronic board $350 + service minimum. We used to talk about planned obsolesce. No plan needed.
I have worked on video games for years. From coin op PacMan to driving games. Complicated electronic board, $600 to $1200 if electrons tied to touch screen tv , bill validators coin slots, buttons etc. It's a crime, in my opinion, to over charge for essentially an on & off switch in furnace. I also believe it's not so much the service guy whose the rip off. IT"S THE MANUFACTURER and the IMPORTER......

Just one guys opinion.......Cheers, Coffeeman
