I have a utility trailer with a mesh style tailgate. The gate is constructed from 5 pieces of 1 1/2 * 1/8 angle running the 4' length of the gate with one at the top and bottom. I would like to use the trailer to transport my SCUT around town but I don't think the tailgate is up to the task. I would like some ideas on how to modify the gate to handle this load. I don't want to remove the gate as I use the trailer for a number of different tasks. I have access to a mig but I'm not to sure how much steel I need to use. I still have to lift the gate so I don't want it to weight more than it has to. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Have mesh gate on my dual axle trailer that handles a 4500lb New Holland. Mesh is very heavy duty and the frame of gate is 2x2 square tubing. I put a Gorilla Lift system on this as it was very heavy. Gorilla Lift makes much more manageable.

adding springs to the gate will make it easy yo lift

I also have trailer with mesh tail gate and have had it for years and works great for four wheelers and lawn tractor.

Not really worried about the mesh as I am the angle iron folding! I load my other lawn tractor all the time just doesn't look like it will hold the SCUT

Max rated load is 2300lbs

Cut a piece of 3/4" plywood to bridge over the gate.
It will help distribute the load over a larger portion of the gate.

I also have a mesh gate. I used 1/4" thick bar laminated on the original thin wall tube. I put the new bars under the tire path. I welded them to the gate frame at the ends and stitch welded them to the original undersized members. I also added a Gorilla lift because of the weight.
