Hi all,

When buying a trailer you often get a (cheap) lock with it. Around here you get a lock that is designed for use when your trailer is hooked to your car/truck.



Great for that use because it is harder to get it off. The downside of these type of locks is that they are unusable for storage. If the lock is on, but not attached to a car/truck, you can still hook it. Because the other locks are more expensive and I had some scrap lying around, I put something together so this lock can also be used for storage. Just slide the bar through the opening, done.

With this item, it is impossible to hook it, add a decent padlock and you are safe(r).

I've never seen a lock like this. Looks functional. All of my trailers have the same coupler system so I cut the threads off of a few old trailer balls and stick them in the coupler, latch it and put a padlock on it.

I watched a youtube video of someone testing a number of trailer locks against a cordless grinder. Grinder won every time. I secure my trailers with a cheap padlock and by insuring them.

True that. Cordless grinders have replaced bolt cutters in most cases. Work great for removing the catalytic converters off Cadillacs. Oh and padlocks off trailers. Insurance wins.

I’ve thought up a nearly grinder proof trailer lock. If it wasn’t so dang hot in the shop I’d try to build it. I’ll post a picture of it ever gets done. Pad locks are virtually useless.
