Don't feel bad, after 24-years of day-in/day-out CAD work, I still get frustrated drawing stairs.

Keep at it with your drawing as practice makes perfect.

boy i remember drawing stairs also. PITA. one of the guys where i worked made a lisp routine for them. . . made life a lot easier

here are some pictures I drew this weekend. I like the one with the BX 22 w/ FEL and snow blower. I never realized how hard it was to draw anything with an auger. I drew that picture yesterday. I also like drawing backhoes, especially the one on the Kubota. And if you cant read it, the first one is a bobcat CT122 and Kioti CK20.

Great drawings Johndeere! :D

Ya know, you could have a bright future as a technical illustrator. That is, if we're still manufacturing anything in this country by the time you're out of college!

Thanks for the advice. i have been working on the tires lately. I also have been doing math Rollover angle of a JD 3720 - Page 3 - TractorByNet.com I just wanted to find out what angle a tractor can operate on without tipping over. For drawing wise, If I want an angle of the tractor that i cant picture in my mind, I walk up to my shelf and grab a diecast tractor. one of the ones I used was the BX22. The Backhoes also have the design of one of my diecast deere backhoes. By the way, those are some nice Kubotas.

You're doing the right thing by using your die-cast models to help in your drawing.

I took a quick look at your tip-over empirical experiments thread and you are on the right track doing experiments; however as others noted, die-cast models only scale down proportionately in size, not in weight or weight distribution. Plus die-cast models do not have dynamically operating components like engines, transmissions, loaders, etc that add into the mix of variables affecting roll-over. Assuming that weight scales down linearly like the X-Y-Z dimensions of an object, a 6' 200# blob like me would weigh in at 8# at 1/25th scale, and my height would be 2.88". Even a lead version of me at 1/25th scale wouldn't weigh 8# since lead comes in at about 0.41 pounds/cubic inch.

Keep up your enthusiasm and I hope us adults (so-called :D) are helping you educate yourself. I wish more teens had an interest in science, technology and engineering.

Thanks for the imput. I would use a real tractor but im not sure I want to see my tractor on its side anytime soon. I know a few people wanted recent pictures of my tractor so I had to upload them. The first one is with the boxblade making a trail in the woods, second is in the garage, third is a seat view in the woods, and fourth is my superintendent. My dog may not like the tractor but she loves me enough to make sure I stay safe. If my dog (CD) does get in the way, i honk the horn and she moves for me. I love my dog and tractor.

Jacob : ...further to our PM's, this is the "portrait" of a friend's Massey with him on it that I painted many years ago. Since this topic is "Tractor Pictures", this must be the place to show it to you.

I painted it with acrylic paint on the smooth side of an 18" X 24" sheet of Masonite board. His girlfriend brought it back a couple weeks ago for me to paint the bullnose chrome strip down the centre of the grill and then a few days later for me to put the "333" on the side between the grill and where it says Massey Harris. He had recently added those items to the tractor as he "shows" it.

I didn't have time to re-photo it as she was in a hurry to get to the framer but invited me to come and photo it in the new frame.

I think I did the original painting in 1985 and never thought to take a picture of it or any other of my paintings I used to do back then,..so I was very thankful she brought it back and now I have a permanent record of that one.

I hope you enjoy seeing it and thanks for the upload instructions,....it finally worked!!!

Jacob : Before I forget "how" I did the photo load, I better do another to make sure.

Here is a blow-up of my avatar (as promised a while ago) with "my" 3520-Cab" as the main power for my nickname,.."tugboat-2".

Hope you enjoy this one also.

Those are awsome pictures! You are a great artist. Yesterday i drew a cool picture of a 3720 cabbie with a forestry package. Its pretty good. It is just really hard to draw a perfect tire. Circles never seem to be easy to draw.

THANKS for the compliments Jacob, very kind of you. Tires and wheels,...yes they are difficult to do so you can perhaps imagine how long I spent trying to get the rears on the Massey to look "somewhere" like real.

I don't know how many sheets of preliminary drawing paper I went through, rubbing out and doing over and over,...and over and over till they looked okay. Same with anything that is awkward and it becomes a challenge,..so you stop and take some time out to just work up that one item till you get it, then go back to your main sheet.

You heard the Pro's (above) mention the difficulty drawing such things as "stairs",...same thing. Practice and more practice Jacob, just like anything, it takes a lot of work,...but then comes the reward of being able to do it finally.

In your PM's you mentioned "track" tractors you've been drawing. If you care to share, go ahead and post them up. I'm sure from past response, there are some others who'd be interested seeing them also.

Driving through our small town the other night, I thought of you with such great interests as your school work, your math, your drawings and your tractor to say nothing of the chores you do,......at the same time, I passed groups of teens hanging out here and there smoking and being loud with NOTHING better to do,..bored with life,..and I was wondering what trouble they would get into before the night was out,..what damage to public property?

It sure made me proud of you,.. thinking of the things that keep you busy and off the streets !!

Good Luck to you Jacob,

Hey, as was mentioned before, I was a heck of a lot older than you when I scored my first tractor... so good for you, buddy! Nice to see the pics of your dog, my girl keeps an eye on me, too!

Jacob:

There is nothing wrong with using drafting templates to help get the wheels and tires looking right. Just make a light pencil sketch with the template and once you fill it in, no one will notice the construction lines. There are also templates for ellipses of varying degrees of rotation.

A good art supply store should have templates, or be able to get them for you. I haven't bought anything from this company; but here are their templates section. Templates - BLICK art materials

/ Tractor pictures #74
mjncad : ....yes I will also thank you very much for the tips and ideas regarding the use of "templates". I guess it's about time I visited an Art Supply Store for a look at the template items.

Other than a pencil, ruler, protractor, good compass, a French Curve and a "large" eraser, I've never had, seen or used other drawing tools. I managed to pick up a very good mechanical drawing table with swing ballast, large table and all the moving T-squares, variable angled straight edges etc. for a hundred bucks from a guy who says the computer outdated the tables. I am ecstatic!! (Think he said he paid a couple grand for it years ago?)

THANKS for the ideas,...What a grrrrreat place this is! Your tips to Jacob have opened my eyes too!!
Didn't mean to hijack the thread.

You got a bargain on the table, etc Tug. Although the computer has essentially done away with manual drafting for design, I still wish I had a good Hamilton or Mayline pedestal lift table with a drafting machine for layout work. I did very little manual drafting professionally as I went right into CAD after my three month summer job at Sundstrand Aviation came to a conclusion in the summer of 1979.

mjncad: ...yes thank you, I realize I got a bargain. The guy was a retired draftsman, the table was under inches of dust in his garage of junk as we hunted for some unrelated item. When I asked about it, he said "give me 50 bucks and its yours". I gave him the hundred and still felt guilty,..but I dreamt of having one for years.

Didn't know they were so doggoned heavy,..took the two of us to wrestle it onto my truck and into my house and then set it up,...WOW! But I love working with it,...it is a dream!

Always thought I could draw withOUT templates or french-curves,...but man do they ever make life more interesting! Thanks again,..I hope Jacob takes your advice!

Best to you,

i have a hamilton electric that i am willing to part with. . .make me an offer

Big Bri : ....electric?,...electric? ...just curious, how does "electric" affect a drafting table? He gave me a couple of "electric erasers" for use with the table but there is nothing electric about mine. Just curious how that works,...but don't get me wrong, I don't want to buy yours.
