The C124's were well before my time. I got to work on a C7 one time but it was headed to the boneyard then. I don't think I ever worked on a recip. When I was in teh Guard I had a chane to work transient alert and do tramp duty. Serviced some cool stuff there. F15's, F14's, Gulfstreams,Lears,KC135. But it was long enough I have forgotten most of it anyways.
Can't belive this thread is that old. Realized I never replied.
I worked on C141s but they brought in an old Shakey (C124)for the air museum at Charleston AFB while I was there. It was something. The old timers had lots of stories about it(like 100 yard cables).

Safety wire; unless you are going to give lessons on how to properly install the wire you better suggest they stick with locktite. Use to work for a major mfg company who used safety wire on some bolts. Amazing how often they would end up with them not run to keep the bolts tight.

As to the vibration of bolts, got on excavator Saturday, noticed bolt on end of tubing missing. Not much vibration there but had to replace before running machine. At same spot about two years ago parked tractor to talk with one of my BIL and one of us noticed bolt about to fall out of starter on tractor. Very little vibration on that machine also. By very little I mean nothing like your's was subjected too, just normal use. The tractor had been pulling a disk and the excavator piling wood to burn. Nothing like trying to get dirt out of bucket.

It is possible when you found one issue you did a careful over view and picked up issues from other times. But on the knob, mine (Kubota also) have a clip through the end to prevent their coming out. I am 100% sure on one tractor as I notice it last week and thought great idea, not sure on other tractor but they will not screw out either.

Man, a two year old thread born again. That is funny. As to using safety wire, it most definitely would be a last resort. You are right about knowing how to use it, main thing is the bolt heads would have to be drilled. It may not stop a bolt from from losing torque but done anywhere near right, it would not turn out but a fraction and would not fall out.

Of course our main concern with tractors, usually, is not vibration but stress. Shearing bolts under load in heavy equipment is more of a problem than vibration. Use good grade 8 bolts and lock washers with Loctite and that normally is enough. If the threads are overstressed or part is soft then oversizing the holes may be the answer. It is what I had to do on one of my tractors from end steering housing bolts.

I worked on them at Charleston.:( My last permanent station.

That's correct. I think the other saying simply says you can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family.
