No, thin plates were cut with Kjellberg plasma, and thick ones with flame torch

Here in America, we would say "Those plates look beefy" implying very heavy duty.

Looking nice as usual! Great work.

Lot's of welding ahead for sure.

The main backhoe frame does make a nice welding table :)

Heavy welding

Are the torched holes round enough to use a pipe to align them? (Concentricity)

If they are cut onsize and are clean enough, I understand. Many torch cuts have a "blip" where they are started and ended. I don't see any blips. Which is good.

Maybe I just need to wait and see what's around the corner....

Yes, the cuts are very clean. If there would be anything in the hole I would just grind it out so the bushing fits tightly

As though as you are :)thumbsup:) do you have an idea how much wire you'll burn for this project?

I assume it will be 20-25 kg of wire in total

As a rule of thumb, 3% weight of weld is added to the net weight of heavy construction equipment frames. If his goal is to stay under 1500kg, he will burn 45kg or three rolls of welding wire.

Thanks Renze, I was not aware of that %. Well I'd like to stay closer to some lower weight...:) we'll see when it's done...

If you turnover 1000 tons of steel in the period you use 30 one ton pallets of welding wire, you get a pretty accurate rule of thumb for cost price calculations šŸ˜‰

It might be a little less for thinner steel, because if you fillet weld, the amount of required welding material quadruples if you double the welds cross section height. But on the other hand, a blunt corner weld on thin steel is 90 degree and therefor takes double the amount of weld than when a weld with the same cross section is welded on 45 degree beveled plate edges, as is common on heavy plates... so yes, i'd say youre not getting by with just two rolls 😁

Interesting info.
Renze, you need to drop a few photos of your work place for us:drink:

Thanks for the link. I wouldn't want you to side track this thread either. I just thought that some production "behind the scene" pics in the welding section would interest those following this build. Those "high reach" demolition booms must take tremdous forces while needing to remain as light as possible for the carrier.
