Hello & WELCOME to TractorByNet.com! :)

I moved your thread to the Build-It Yourself Forum.

Rigid axles to body or suspended?

What is your budget or access to auto parts? What will you use it for? Does it need to float? Do you have a year to work on it? Typically you will need the open front diff off a independant suspension 4x4, Japanese mini trucks will have lower gear ratios. You need to move disc brakes inboard for braked steering then short CV shafts to your drive wheels. ATV Tires allow you to pump up the tires to hold the tracks or else you will need a track tensioning system added. Sounds like a neat project.

Things will also work better if your drive (cog) wheels are in the rear to keep the tracks tight under load....
Just noticed you said 6x6, do you plan to drive all 6? Like an Argo? I would build with 6 ground wheels plus a rear drive axle that is slightly elevated. Don't know how big you are planning to go however...

Here are two of my favorite tracked builds lately from TBN...

Also, I think it was David Devuano that build a wheelbarrow type tracked dumper a long time back. The track was pretty clever. If I remember right it was link chain with U shaped metal cleats welded to every other chain link (or so). Think tire chains on steroids. If it wasn't you David feel free to call me a liar.

What is interesting is the US Army (ww2?) Weasel also used chain links to connect the steel track pads. If you are looking at my tracked wheel barrow on Ytube, note that I would build more wrap around the tires and use solid rubber at the front. There are hundreds of homemade tracked vehicles on Utube. Some of the best are found under 3/5 scale tanks. A really simple to build tank transmission is also found which I might consider in any future builds.
