Tracked compact Yanmar

Nothing impressed me. In the mud maybe. I would of liked to have seen but besides that?
I have a few hundred feet of hill I have to cut. It's angled slightly more and I cut it with a push mower. I actually stopped the Yanmar dead in it's tracks sideways on a hill. Hit a hidden hole kicking the Drive wheel up. Didn't have for all that long and found out the hard way. The mowers 3pt. bound up and kept it from going over it looked like. Talk about moving slow in the seat! Was able to get the front wheels pointing down hill and then stepped on the Differential ever so slightly and it came down. I knew how close I was to going over. It doesn't take me that long and my front wheel drive mower works easily on it. I have no problems doing it first making sure to get out before it gets hot after that........

Oh I think it is a neat little machine and, no doubt, has some top notch engineering. For its intended purpose (I assume tilling rice fields) it is probably about as good as it gets. I, personally, just don't like watching the guy on hills - especially going down the hill with no weight on the rear and no seatbelt.

Kind of off topic, but that is EXACTLY why I hate the thought of inexperienced or feeble minded people running equipment. It's the worst case situations that matter.

When we bought a (Fiat) Universal tractor in 72, it came with brochures on all the versions you could get. Tracked, Vinyard, Hi ones, low ones, 2wd, 4wd. I am sure the Europeans have come a long way since then. We haven't.

We haven't come that far in manufacturing in the USA either. I mean, we look good here until we begin to compare our range with some of the companies that do so much technical manufacturing. I would love to see just what the range of Yanmar's products really is. Just like Fiat, Yanmar apparently has divisions that have no problem producing technically advanced machinery even though the market must be really small. To support it all, I've heard that Yanmar builds a large percentage of the world's cargo ship diesel engines - but just where it goes from there I've no idea.

I do know that I run across Yanmar products in specialized electronics used for commercial fishing - some really fancy radar and underwater fishery stuff. And I know they are big in pumps and generators as well as engines - ranging from the very small to large.

Back 40 years ago a friend used to spend time in Japan and brought back publications that featured Yanmar's research work rangine from mining to foundary work to alternative wetland crops. It was fascinating to read about their work in fish aquaculture. So they have a wide range of products. Common threads seem to be diesels and food production.
I've wondered if their whole compact tractor line is just another sideline for them.

John Deere is maybe the US company that is most like Yanmar, but without quite the wide range of products.

Somewhere on their website was a statement that the chairman has a broad interest in improving the human condition, which means investing in development of better farming equipment. Big-ship diesels and maybe small-boat diesels (for offshore fishing, big in Japan) are likely larger divisions in Yanmar compared to farming equipment.

Back around 2000 when I got my Yanmar JD, I fooled around for a few days on an ocean freighter in the great lakes. I was quite impressed to see three Yanmar Generators making power for the ship. Two always running, a third for standby.
