I think I have it narrowed down between a Toro SL500 and the Cub LT1050 as my next mower. Are these essentially the same tractor as I think Mtd owns and makes both don't they? They are both almost the same price as well. Any input, positive or negative on either of these? I've steered away from a ZTR as my lawn is fairly flat and hardly any obstacles and I also want to tow a roller and an aerator on occasion.

Thanks,
Steve

Somebody enlighten me a bit. I didn't think there was any connection between Toro and MTD, although I know Cub Cadet has been owned my MTD for quite some time. And I also don't know what a Toro SL500 is; don't find that model on Toro.com. What am I missing?

Bird, I think the OP meant XL500, unless Home Depot or Lowes has their *own* model. Unless you can find a Toro Classic GT (sweet machine!), all the other Toro XL and GT series are rebadged MTD's. Steve, get what ever model has a better dealer presence in your area. You may need parts and service some day. Both Toro and CC are easy to get parts for.

A lot of model's have different model numbers in Canada for some reason or other.

Toro - Homeowner Lawn & Garden Tractors

Steve

P.S. Either one will be bought at legitimate dealer.

Where can I find and see a Toro XL series? I can find LX, but not XL; must be overlooking something.

I knew I had to be missing or overlooking something. It looks like that's almost (but not quite) the same; well, maybe similar anyway to the LX500. I've owned a Cub Cadet lawn tractor (1995 model) and a Toro ZTR and currently have a Toro walk behind; just never heard of Toro being related to MTD.

Oh well, it sure ain't the first time I learned something new on Tractorbynet.:)

Oops! you're right Bird. LX, not XL. per the US site anyway.

Other than the Toro 315 GT Classic, (One tough tractor, if you can find one) the other Toro LGT's are built for Toro by MTD and have nearly identical clones wearing Cub Cadet clothes. In the low price field where competition is the toughest, it's more economical for some companies to sell someone else's rebadged tractor rather than build it on their own anymore.

I agree the Cub/Toro battle would come down to buying from a dealership, and which one is most reputable.

The LT 1050 Cub has the following over the Toro:

23 hp vs 22 hp
1 year more tractor warranty
5 year frame warranty
hydrostat compared to CVT
Deck Wash
Mulch Plug
3.5 gal fuel tank compared to 3 gal fuel tank
4 bolt rear axle compared to e-clip on the Toro
Front bumper on the Cub

The Cub ad price is $100 more but if you add the bumper, mulch plug and deck wash to the Toro, the Cub is actually $27.99 less and you get more warranty, more hp, hydrostat, 4 bolt axle, and larger fuel tank. The Cub is the best buy.

MTD builds the Toro units but does not own Toro or the name.
Bottom line, whatever brand you decide on buy it from a dealer!!!!!!!!!!!!

Toro GT2000 series and ToroLX series are MTD's, just like cub, bolens, yard machines, huskee, white, troybilt, yardman. Take your pick, they're all the same. Just pick you're favorite color scheme:rolleyes:. If you're going to buy an MTD, better get it from a good dealer with a good service department. Have fun picking out your favorite color:) .

According to Toro's website the SL500 is hydrostatic drive not CVT, looks to have 5 bolt pattern holding rear wheels on, looking at the specs its a different version from the LX500 which by the way is not listed on the canadian site.
The Toro dealer is the same dealer that I bought my tractor from, it's just that the closest dealer to my cottage is a Cub dealer and also a good dealer as well.

I overlooked the fact that you are not based in the US. I am unaware of the Canadian models.

No problem, glad you mentioned about the CVT as I forgot about some manufacturers saying they were automatic trannies not thinking about CVT's vs Hydro's. That's exactly what I like about this website, there's always something somebody will mention that you can overlook so easily.
