For the purpose of moving manure piles, mulch, and perhaps some light landscaping would a tooth bar be a good investment (on an FL352 on a B2410)?

Are there any reasons why having the tooth bar is a poor idea for normal uses?

Does Kubota make these or shoud I be thinking or ordering one and doing the attachment myself?

Thanks!

I can't think of a time when the toothbar hasn't helped with whatever I am doing with the FEL...well maybe backscraping, but you can roll the bucket so the teeth are out of the way and still scrape a smooth surface.

If all you're doing is moving material that is loose you may not have occasion to need teeth...but lifting brush, roots, digging into the shale on the road...especially if it is as dry as this past year has been....the teeth have been essential for me.

And compared to everything else about buying the tractor...the toothbar was cheap!

Seems that they are not difficult to add later, esp if your mfr has one designed for your bucket. Maybe you could check that and proceed in steps.

Goodluck.

I perform all the tasks you mention without a tooth bar, so you wouldn't need it. Plus as others have mentioned, many places offer them and they are not hard to add later. The only chore for which you'd have to remove the tooth bar is to use the FEL to plow snow.

I just leave mine on the skidsteer Mike. If you position it right it doesn't dig in at all. It's also handy if the snow is packed at all.

Ah, yes, if only I had a skid steer to leave it on. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I was just out at the barn (see Off Topic) and since all our snow has melted, I had a chance to survey how many stones I picked up and moved while I was plowing with the FEL. There weren't all that many, so I agree. You can leave the tooth bar on if you're careful how the bucket is tilted, i.e., keep it level so the teeth can't dig in when you don't want them to.

Roy,

Welcome to TBN /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Steve Carver, one of the sponsers of TBN posted this some time ago.
<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=implement&Number=66196&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1#Post66196>Tooth Bar from Carver</A>

I purchased my tooth bar from Steve it fit like a glove and was a much better bar and fit than the one available from my dealer. If you can drill two 3/4 inch holes you can install this bar.

The tooth bar is great but a little dangerous. I have nicked
fence posts with it when maneuvering in close quarters. But
I wouldn't want to be without one and they're pretty cheap.
I have two bolt-on bars which I bought from Carver. I use
the toothbar in warm weather and replace it with the cutting
bar in the winter for snow removal and ice chopping chores.
One minor problem with the toothbar is that it complicates
removing the FEL. I have some nice grooves in my asphalt
driveway from the teeth. I now place a sacrificial 2x8 plank
under the teeth when removing the FEL.

I have used a toothbar on a skid steer and the only time it comes off is loading the dump truck out of a loose pile. 1 1/16 wrench and 30 seconds and it's off(or on). Works great for digging gravel out of a bank and clearing vegetation. I will be ordering one for the NH 1920 this spring.

RhallVA,

When I bought my tractor, I really didn't know why I got my FEL!

People would say, "Why did you get that thing?". I couln't answer them very well.

Well, now I know it is invaluable. In the same vein, If I knew then what I know now, I'd definitely get a toothbar!

Tomorrow, for example, I am moving three spruces. With a toothbar, I'll be able to dig deeper, wider and faster.

There are many threads on this subject on TBN. I don't recall anyone ever saying that they weren't worth the investment.

I'd say you just about summed it up.

MChalkley,

Although I am relatively new here, I would like to see some way of getting quickly to core threads such as toothbars, FELS, Box scrapers, etc. Maybe we ought to talk to Mohammed about creating subdirectories under Attachments?

RhallVA, I'll just add my $.02. I went through this same process a couple of months ago and got similar answers. So I ordered a tooth bar from Steve Carver and had it on my JD4100 in less than three weeks. Just measure the inside of your bucket when/if you order. If you are interested, http://www.carverequipment.com/tooth_bars.htm

I was out today pulling vines and multiflora out of trees and digging out the roots. I also dug out a few stumps (under 4"), graded where the town snowplow had furrowed back my driveway and it froze there, all of which would have been difficult or impossible without the toothbar. I consider it a real good investment. And it does come off very easily. Just don't get too close to your pickup truck or pole barn! /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

just curious I have never looked in to a tooth bar but the more I read and check out web sites like http://www.carverequipment.com/tooth_bars.htm

the more I think about how much eaiser clearing the brush in my woods would be. I have a HD bucket for my tc40 the bucket has the pre drilled holes for bolt on cutting edge. I just got the bucket. I never asked about if new holland sells tooth bars or if you are better off getting a differnt manufacture for this. what are people thoughts or has anyone purchused one from new holland and what about do they cost.

Greenthumb,
Mine came from New Holland with my 16LA with a 60" bucket. Cost was about $225 if I remember correctly. I've got no experience with any other, but it seems to do all the things discussed here, including catching fence posts and catching timbers that hold up the barn roof (and catching ankles if I don't leave the teeth flat on the ground when I park it.) I've never taken it off, so can't vouch for the ease of that.

Would be interesting to know...

With or without a toothbar, the FEL isn't the best choice to dig a grave, though...
