I had a "brutal" day at the office all day today, and this was my office,

Resized-20240903-135318-S.jpg

Much of it was so thick and tall I couldn't see through it, and then there was a swamp I had to cross, and I nearly got stuck crossing it, but I got it all done now!

Your mower does a nice job. What is it like pulling it from one corner like that? It gives you a great offset so you can keep the wheeler out of the rough but does it try to run off to one side ?? Just wondering. Mine pulls from the middle with no offset capability. Wish I had some at times.

Pulls and tracks fine, even on hillsides.

I had a busy day today, fixing the sway chains on one tractor and moving a rotary cutter onto it along with some other tractor related jobs. But I did find some time to pick some apples,

Spent a beautiful fall morning mowing the pasture. 70 degrees not a cloud in the sky. Kind of dusty because we've had no rain in several weeks. Grass not very tall, but lots of weeds, Russian Olive, Bradford pear, etc. to be mulched.

All done...

We were gone all through the time we should have been weeding but what little garden I planted, did fine anyway.

Roma's and Big Boys, that's the only tomato varieties I plant anymore...

The tractors look capable.

They look like two bulls facing off, ready to lock horns.

I'm putting my money on the one on the right!

Can't be sure, but it looks like an 8' mower on the big one? Will the smaller one work an 8 footer also?

Do you have a rough estimate of how much fuel they each burn for 8 hours of mowing Mr. Sawyer Rob?

Both have Woods 6' cutters on them, it's just that the cutter on the bigger tractor "looks" bigger, (60 pto hp) is a newer heavier built mower. The smaller tractor has (45 pto hp)

Unlike all the "magic" little tractors on this site, where I mow it takes a pretty decent farm tractor HP, to cut the thick heavy grass that we cut with a 6' rotary cutter!

Depending on how heavy the engines are loaded, the little tractor burns 3 to 4 quarts an hour, the bigger one burns 4 to 5 quarts an hour, these SLH diesels are VERY efficient.

IMG_20240908_102056945.jpg I was headed south to see my mother Friday but on a whim I took a side trip to my neighbor's yard sale. They had just put out this Ford 501 sickle bar mower. I don't know Jack Schtick about this type of implement but when they said it was $350 I grabbed it.
Today I took the tractor up, loaded the mower onto the grapple and brought it home.
It does appear to be welded in one place.IMG_20240908_102426738.jpg Yet whether it was done at the factory or as a repair, they did a good job on it.

My only issue with the Ford 501 sickle bar is that they used a pitman arm to drive the sickle, you can not mow much off level with them, much angle up or down and the pitman arm will break, it will also sound terrible for a few seconds first.

I don't expect to use it much. I mostly wanted it to mow under my fruit trees where I can't drive under them.
At least that Pitman is wood, so nothing gets bent.

I see you still have your sense of humor.

Nothing "magic" here. Just a hard working tractor, earning it's keep:

Can't see the ground due to how thick this is. Too thick to walk through. Also standing taller than my cab, which is 8'. Weeds went to 10'. I'm mowing this as fast as I care to, since I can't see what's in front of me, and I'm pushing down the weeds in front of me with my bucket.

Same spot, just an earlier pass, before getting into the really tall part. No magic here either. Just mowing at a fast walking pace, which is all I was in the mood for, considering I can't see what's hidden in the weeds (which had things like pallets, old tires, rock piles and broken concrete.

Speaking of concrete, found this little beauty hiding in hood-height grass. You can see the spot it started off at in the foreground of the picture, and where it landed after being swatted by the mower out on the trail. The bucket went right over the top of that one, lol. No "magic" here either.

6' cutter on 32 pto hp. No "magic", it just works.

Most of this ahead of me is taller than my hood, and too thick to walk through. There's also a hidden rock pile up ahead.
