Wow good eye, Mark.

The stainless tubing was from the swimming pool guy who rented space here. It is probably about 2.5 inch diameter and bent in handrail configurations.

The chrome was from one of the other tenants that does a lot of TIs for retail and big box stores.

Had a little insomnia so figured I'd get a head start repairing an aluminum cylinder head from a 390FE that was dropped off yesterday.

Apparently someone stripped the accessory hole, messed it up worse trying to re-drill it so figured they would drill a new one, right into the water jacket.

Had grind it out to get enough access to fill in the hole with weld.

Took a couple hrs but finally got it built up, not pretty but doesn't have to be.
These large aluminum heads really suck the heat out of the weld area, had the Dynasty turned up all the way (280A), really wish I had a 350 for these jobs.


Later today I should have the machine work done if everything goes well.

Well round one had a small leak when I pressure tested it , small area where the tap cut into what appeared to be an inclusion. Ended up fixing it the next day.

Round 2 went a lot better.

Ignore the un-pretty weld, it was getting machined off anyways, and after almost 2hrs of straight welding @280a I didn't really care!

All machined, I put a helicoil in it since I've had bad experiences threading straight into a weld buildup.

At least all the machining setup was still ready to go

I know right! I'm pretty good at fooling people sometimes

If I do much more of these I'll need a bigger welder.

Na, I don't have all that space you do for that monstrosity! Besides I'd have to hardwire it in, whats the input requirements, 100a breaker?

I like my little compact inverter that can run a 3/32 sharpened tunsten at 280a and still be pointed when I'm done!

100 amp minimum. Quite the power sucker.

Another inverter is best for you. Maybe a Dynasty 350. . $12k probably.

Yeah a 350 is on my list one day, but the 280 is great welder also and honestly I don't plan on doing a lot if large casting repairs. Oh and you know I can't afford new prices, so most likely a buy a used setup, can get one for probably half that.

Well after all this work, it looks like I might be moving

At least I should be able to build another shop that might be larger, but looks like I won't have 3phase so that will be a downgrade. Positive would be better location with a little more land, and best of all right down the street from my parents so the kids could walk over to their house.

Still trying to figure out what to do.

At some point I will be building a new shop, was about to put a deposit on a 40x60 red iron building but decided I would be putting the cart before the horse so to speak as I still have to close on the new property.

Will probably be over a year before I can add a new shop as material prices are ridiculously high and even if ordered now the shop wouldn't have been here until Nov.

At least there is an existing shop on the property, not as big/nice as my current shop, but should hold me off for a bit.

I currently maintain the property and love the view of the back yard.

Nice setting. Question, how did they handle the floor in the shop with the three doors and the tapered apron? Is there a step in the garage floor? Or is it a separate room? Jon

Far left bay is stepped down, not ideal but usable until I can build a larger shop.
