My property is a jungle. It is rough nasty terrain. Lots of sticks limbs and stuff that either pops off valve stems, jams into rim seals and causes leaks or the worst, punctures sidewalls (I have never punctured a tire in a "normal through the tread fashion).

Also most of my rims are in tough shape.

I have converted all my rims to metal stems. But now due to a couple of side wall punctures I am going to have to tube some tires. The previous results have been bad. Valve stems completely ripped off and have to replace the tube.

Now I have a crazy idea. What if I were to weld "guards" around the tube valve stems. Like a 1" piece of pipe. Just long enough to go past the stem. Close enough to service. It would have to be notched and stuff. Not an easy peasy process but... Then maybe throw in some of my gemplers stuff that I have been sitting on for more than a year.

I have spent so much converting to metal valve stems this solution sucks but.

Anyway, wanting to get your guys thoughts on this... No sense throwing good money after bad...

MVC-026F.JPGWe've found guards to be the anwer to broken valve stems. We use our tractors close to vine rows and used to have the stems broken too regularly.

We use steel tube of about 2" OD welded on in three little spots where the square cut end touches the rim. (see photos)

From memory we even managed to do the small welds without removing the water filled tube (and tyre) from the rim.

For damaged tubes it's possible (in Australia anyway) to buy glue on valve stems and they work. I think the stems and adhesive were made by Rema?

Exactly what I am looking to do. Thank you for the pix. My only real issue is that the PT rims are the same size of a small cars tire... 12" thick (30cm) but not all that tall.

Where in Australia are you? I have friends in Perth and Sydney. Never get to see them except when the come state side. Haven't been to Sydney in years..

I'm about 70Km (45-50 miles) North East of Adelaide which is nearly halfway from Sydney to Perth.

The Barossa Valley is one of Australia's best known wine districts.

If you're ever in the vicinity email me and I'd be happy to give you a guided tour of the district.

So that would be...Tanunda? Bethany? Krondorf?
What grapes do you grow on your vineyard? (Do you have a wine label we should look for over here?) We're just a little high and dry here to grow grapes.

It's great to see the big green tractors again- I used a Deutz when I was younger. It was a great machine.

All the best,

Peter

Does anyone know of other sources for these rims to fit the 26x12.00x12 tires, i.e. 10.5" wide rims with dual offsets?

JJ posted a link awhile back, but they no longer sell those rims.

All the best,

Peter

I had the local wheel and rim place make two rims for my PT-1445. I had the center section made with 3/8 in steel and off set. Cost was around $ 75.00 each.

I think the Ditch Witch trenchers use a wide rim similar to mine.

JJ,
Do you have the 16.5x10 loader tires, or do you have the R1 tires like the 18XX (26x12.00x12 NHS)?

Were the rims to replace existing rims that you had, or did you do duals on two rims?

Thanks,

Peter

I have the 26X12X12 tires. Just extra rims for extra tires.

Ponytug,

Tanunda, no I don't have a label, fruit is sold to Barossa Valley Estate (E & E, Ebenezer and E - Minor are in the range sold into the US.

Fruit is also sold to Peter Lehmann Wines and R Wines, both also sold in the US, the latter based in the US and owned I think, by Dan Phillips.

I grow Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Semillon and Gerwurtztraminer.

Have just started the 08 harvest, did Pinot last Wed. and Traminer will be harvested Sun. night for Mon. delivery.

Excellent! I will look for them!

I'm amazed you have time for anything else, like reading TBN. Crush season around here is typified by people running around with their hair on fire for about sixty days as the different varietals mature.

All the best,

Peter

We ponder grapes up here. We battle light issues and the weather narrows our choices of grapes. The thing I see though is that everyone is growing grapes. Just exactly how much wine can people drink? My gut tells me that a lot of people in the area are going to be as surprised as those who planted christmas trees in the near future.

But for Australia, you guys make a great wine so more power to you!

Carl

ps. Later today I will have photos of the protectors that have been welded on my wheel stems...

And finally, I had 3 of my tires tubed. My intent was to put in some Gemplers Super Junk that I have had sitting for nearly a year.

Well best laid plans.. The caps were made up and welded on, based on my current tubed tires. Dropped them off at the same tire store and dangit, they used different tubes. These had short little stems, so they had to put stem extenders on, and they point in an entirely different direction. I complained to the shop manager but he said this was all they would ever be getting in.

Grumble... Grumble.. Grumble... Now I have to figure out Plan B. How to get gemplers down these friggin pie holes..

Carl, How in the heck did you beat that rim up so badly? I can see where it wouldn't hold air without a tube.

Rims were used to begin with and pretty thrashed. But, between the 1" canes on the blackberries, and the 3" alders, everything gets beaten up all that much more.

Carl.

Did you get the Gemplers to go in the tires? If not, this is what I do. Remove the valve core, and compress the tire ,and put a tube over the valve stem. and to the bottle of Gemplers. When you let up on the compression, vacuum in the tire will help to suck in the Gompers .

If it is a tube, you might have to heat it a little and squirt it in.

Good idea. I got the bottle and was wondering how I was going to get it in...

Actually, I got the 5 gallon jug... 10 tires, 1/2 gallon per...

Glad you guys like the rims. Was going to chrome them but will wait until next year...

Boy that rim sure looks almost new you can tell that it has never had to have a hammer laid to its outer edges to straighten it.
