John deer 1023e
Hi folks,

I recently tipped over my brand new JD1023e (dumb). It was on its side for about 5 minutes. When I picked it up I waited for about five minutes before I restarted it. It started fine but there was a fair bit of blue smoke. When the tractor starts it makes a fair bit of blue smoke but it burns off after a couple of minutes. When I open it up to full power it produces more blues smoke and kind of sputters a bit. I went to the JD dealership and he told me that you never restart a diesel engine when it has been on it side for any time. He said I should have waited a day (being a neophyte I didn't know this info). He claims I could have created hydro lock and damaged something. I already replaced the air filter and this did not help, but when I remove the intake hose to the air filter it does not smoke. There does not seem to be any loss in power. My question is, will this smoke burn off in time or should I take it in to have it inspected? If it is my fault I probably will have to pay for the repairs... ouch?

Thanks for the help

What happens is the oil in the bottom of the engine is now all over the side of the engine, and can leak into the top of the cylinders. As well as other places - perhaps through the head into the air intake passages.

When you get it upright, it needs to drain for a long time to get the oil all tucked down to the bottom again. Aslo you should turn the engine over by hand the next day, several revolutions, to see that there is not a puddle of oil trapped in the cylinder. Liquids don't compress, and so if there is, it will have to bust something to get the puddle of oil to get out....

You can assume one of 2 things:

That all is well with your tractor and it will burn off the odd bits of oil remaining here & there over time and it will be fine.

Or assume you busted something, and it will be better to have it looked at before a busted ring or bent valve srapes up something and makes the repairs even bigger.

I don't know which way to guess - likely the first one is how it is, but if not the second one can get very expensive....

If removing the air intake hose changes the smoke, you have a clue that maybe something is messed up with the air intake path. If something internal to the engine was damaged, removing the air intake wouldn't change the amount of oil getting into the combustion chamber.

Have you looked around carefully to see if something along the air intake path was damaged or dislodged in the fall? Or, as I think about it, have you checked to see if there might be an accumulation of oil somewhere in the air intake path that gets sucked into the engine when you rev it up?

The problem with diesel engines and oil on top of the cylinders is they are such high compression. I gas engine is usually around a 10 to 1 compression ratio while a diesel is usually around 17 to 1. This means a little oil on top of a piston can cause problems. Since the oil can't be compressed like air, problems occur, often a bent rod.

Several months ago somone turned a tractor over, then resarted and had a bent rod. It ran funny, but it did still run. The cylinder with the bent rod was down on compression, so it wasn't burning well. This would be the worse case for your tractor. Best case would be that oil got somewhere it didn't belong and your burning it out.

When it tipped over oil probably ran though the pcv hose into the intake. This happens to cars quite often when they tip over. You can take the intake hoses and airbox apart to check for oil to be sure.

Since no one else asked. How did you tip it over?

This is one of my main concerns with my 1023e since I have a hilly lawn. I'm thinking of installing an incline/yaw indicator. I have one on my new F150 and it's cautioned me when travelling off road. As someone else asked, how did you flip it? Can you by any chance give an indication of incline degrees if it was a hill? This information would be good to know to avoid this danger. Glad you are OK.

Second that and provide as many details as you can share.

Since your tractor is fairly low profile, it makes me more curious as to the conditions or circumstances in which caused the tip over.

Somethink else I forgot to mention. I asked my dealer about what I could do to help from tipping on hills. He suggested two options, travel verticle up and down the hill or if traversing sideways use filled tires & wheel weights. This will help keep the CG lower. I have a cab which is heavy and this tends to raise the CG. Also, I hope you had your seat belt on. It's very important to use a seatbelt and let the ROPS do it's job to protect the driver from being hurt. So many people think it's safer to try and jump from the tractor if it's going over. Many people get hurt or killed this way.
