Time for Chainsaw Chaps

After reading the original post in this thread, I went right to amazon and ordered the Husqvarna chaps I have been putting off buying

I have Husky chaps that I bought because they were not orange :D

But I am looking hard at the Labonville ones that wrap over the back of the ankle. I had noticed when climbing around a tree (i.e. while limbing) the regular chaps can get rotated to the side at the ankle.

I have a pair of the Labonville chaps and very glad that my calves are protected after having lesser chaps before. If you get a pair, I doubt you will be disappointed. Heard too many horror stories from my wife who works at the hospital.

For those like me who got the inexpensive Forester chaps from Amazon, Wranglerstar on youtube did a test of them and then replicated the test using Stihl pro chaps. The Forester let the chain through and about 3/8" into the log underneath. Saw was an 026 running full speed. Same saw and bar and the Stihl chaps just caught it- the inner liner was torn but no scratch on the log.

Now this is nowhere near a scientific test. You'd need to ensure that the chain was the same speed, bar came down with the same speed etc etc and do enough runs to get a statistically significant result. But it's something better than conjecture.

I did notice that the Foresters are thinner and lighter than my old Stihl chaps. This makes them a little easier to bear when it's hot.

Maybe I will look at the top of the line Stihl chaps instead. Impressive.

So are the Stihl Pro Mark Wrap Chaps the top of the Stihl line? So confusing on their website.

I'm a PPE fanatic (old Navy habits die hard), so when I bought my first chainsaw I also kitted myself out with a full set of chaps, helmet with mesh face-shield & earmuffs and gloves.

The chaps - STIHL Pro Protection - were bloody expensive (A$272 today) but cheap compared to losing a leg, or worse. The legs buckle at the back, plus a buckle/velcro flap fully enclosing calf-to-ankle. There's a leather T-bar holder strap on the waist belt and a very deep pocket on the left leg for wedges.

I have full chainsaw pants. They are loose enough that I can wear jeans under them in the winter, but I strip off the jeans in the summer since together they are hot. Skipping the jeans would be a bit of a drafty show with chaps, though.
