I might suggest taking it back off and painting it orange.

PineRidge, of all people to suggest the color orange! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I would certainly, without question, or hesitation, have expected you to suggest BLUE! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Myself, I would probably suggest black...bias neutral and a good contrast to the orange backhoe stick... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Thumb ... GEEZ IT\"S HANDY !!!

Well, Mike, I dunno ... everything I do seems to evolve and get used wall-to-wall. Then I think of something else that Baby could do that I have to make something for. I sure have the desire to clean my stuff up for presentation but I'm so wrapped up on functionallity and moving on to more fuctionallity that cleanup and painting just doesn't seem to get done ... but I assure you that I have no prejudice against those that clean-up and paint their stuff /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Thumb ... GEEZ IT\"S HANDY !!!

PS, if the cleaning and painting thing ever happens, I'm kinda hooked on the "cold-galvenizing" (gray) paint ... pretty cool stuff ...

Re: Thumb ... GEEZ IT\"S HANDY !!!

Just a painting thought... Home Depot sells Refrigerator Paint. Don't laugh!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif HIGH gloss finish epoxy paint. Not many colors but they do have black. No primer needed / direct spray on bare metal so theres nothing soft underneath to undermine the HARD epoxy paint. About $3 a can & for the durability, WELL worth it.. Only thing I think you'd find more durable or harder would be powder coat...

Re: Thumb ... GEEZ IT\"S HANDY !!!

I really didn't expect to get in early enough tonight to post this but, I found that I was plumb out of chilie sauce and had to steep some pods to make some more ... ya know how grouchy a guy can get with no chilie sauce in the house ... anyway ...

All designs need to be tested for all things they were intended for. I previously posted that my 50c thumb did an acceptable job hauling logs out of my creek and that it could pick up a decent rock. Today I decided to go rock popin' around the property. Then it was necessary to use the thumb to actually pick up the popped rocks and put them some where. I remain in awe of the thumb. Pic 1 is the heaviest rock I've picked or moved (even though the pic doesn't do it justice). Pic 2 is how much ballast I needed to move that rock (I really like the load on the raer tires rather than the front ala, grapple). Pic 3 shows a decent pile ( the scared rocks are those moved into place today).
Cheers!

Re: Thumb ... GEEZ IT\"S HANDY !!!

I am curious If I can expect the same awesome rock lifting results with a JD 448 back hoe? I honestly had no idea that a compact utility tractor could come close to lifting those kinds of loads! I see industrial TLB pick up the same size rocks, but the tractors are 3 times the size. Am I under estimating the cabibility of compact utility tractors? I am seriously thinking about getting a 4020 series with the 400X loader and 448 backhoe setup. I'm looking for those awesome rock picking characteristics! I guess I have lil faith in most manufacturers claims. JD says 800+ lbs of lift at pins, at full extension. Do you think that's accurate? so figure 800 - 300 for bucket and claw = 500 lb lift ability? Any ideas would be greatly appreaciated! Thanks ! Brian

Re: Thumb ... GEEZ IT\"S HANDY !!!

You may have noticed that a lot of the rock and stump picking operations relayed on this forum are using a Kubota BX22/23. That's pretty close to the smallest TLB out there. I would have to think a JD 40xx would have more capacity, but I don't really know. My manual shows a lifting force of ~500# a bit before max height but I don't know if that's including the bucket weight or not. I do know that when my boom runs out of power or height, I can use the dipperstick to get more height.
