That's really surprising. I have HID's in two of my Dodges, likely many of the same components as Jeep, one is 9 years old and zero issues. I also had HID's in a Volvo that we kept for 12 years and something like 200k miles! Zero issues.
Lifespan probably depends a lot on how many hours they are used, not calendar age.

I'd buy this engineer a beer or 3.

Interesting concept, gotta wonder how they handled fuel lines, engine output shaft, exhaust and throttle linkage.

Sure makes maintenance a lot easier than most of the 60s/70s vintage vans where the engine was between the driver & passenger.

You mentioned the same questions I had.

Think generator not vehicle engine and it all works.
That's where my mind went, until I wondered about the exhaust connections. Seems a parting coupling could be made for that, but such things don't always weather well under a vehicle.

I would tend to think that the exhaust would be self contained within the confines of the cradle that the engine slides out on. I would think that it would only run when the motor home is parked.

Years ago a friend was a mechanic for a nearby city working on their Neoplan buses that gave lots of trouble. He said they were rear engine with a short driveshaft to differential. One day going down a long hill a U joint broke and the driveshaft whipped around until it beat it's way through the floorboard. Luckily no people were in seats above but two old ladies in seat behind. He said they were understandably terrified but unhurt.
They hired this big strong muscular guy who was the bottom of a hill one day when workers had to change a flat tire. "Just roll it to me & I'll catch it!" he said. The workers argued a bit finally said okay. The big guy tried catching it but fell back with a loud "Ooommmphh!". He was OK but embarrassed.

I had a 66' GMC with a six banger. It was actually not bad to work on. I bought it as a shell sitting in a field. LOL, it was used for some kind of fruit/vegetable business and every door was boogered up. I got doors all over the place. Looked like Joseph's tecnicolored coat. I pieced together an engine, 3spd, bell housing, etc. To put the engine in, I laid the engine on it's side, rolled it under, stood it up and jacked it into place. It was far easier to work on than my E450 box van with a V10.

I don't know if an experience at Kroger today can be blamed on an engineer or a bean counter or both? Never happened before today either. Anyway, as i walked into the store, someone was coming out. An alarm went off and I heard him say something about his cart wheels locking up. Wanting to get in and out, I walked on, got my stuff, did the self check out and when I went through the door, the alarm went off and my cart wheels locked up. The clerk that was watching over the self check came over, turned off the alarm which released my cart wheels and said something about a computer sensing that I did not spend enough time checking out. I realize that retail theft is a big issue but I think that they need to go back to the drawing board.
