The next post and the overhead went a lot easier.

What's going to happen next, in a week or so, we've both got full plates this next week, is I will build a framework out of steel for a faux stone platform for the timbers to appear to rest upon. There will also be faux stone wings and columns from the timber entry to the fence line.

The gate will be made and powdercoated wood grain to go with the wood theme of the entry way.

First of course we'll attach the two outside posts for the timbers supporting the overhead.

It's fourteen feet seven inches to the post side of the opening to the bottom of the overhead log. The gate opening is sixteen feet approximately across.

That's some real craftsmanship Harv, you should be proud. And on the weather thing, we're supposed to be to -2 tonight. I'm going out in the morning to photograph the freezing waves on the lighthouse on Lake Michigan. If I get a winner, I'll post it. Stay warm!

How's the broken finger doing, Harv?

It's doing fine Bird, thanks for asking. Still a little swollen and tender, but nothing to scream about.

The finger has reached an agreement with the rest of my body. It don't demand extra attention if it isn't given any. It only lets me know it's hurt when I jam or bang it. I've just about learned to not do that.

Glenda and me were talking about pain just a little bit ago. If I stop and do an inventory I don't have many joints that don't keep a low grade ache at best and medium grade throb at worst. I guess hurting all over sorta mellows us out where we don't see ourselves in pain because we're not concentrating on a particular owie.

Fascinating! I love your posts and admire your skills and creative imagination.
Thanks, Harv.

Hey Harv,

Hope the finger heals quickly. With the type of work you do and document for us, it is obvious that you are pursuing a passion. Great work on the stair project and from what i see, that gate project is going to be awsome as well. Just curious, are you through bolting the timbers to the pipe in the ground?

Kathy and I both think the pictures make it look taller than wide, but we'll take your word for it.;)

We are anxiously waiting to see how you attach the gate and how the finished gate looks when those nice oak trees leaf out in a few months.:)

There are plates welded to the pipe with six inch stainless lags going up into the base of the timbers. There are also plates welded to the pipe at the top with again, six inch stainless lags going into the timber.

Jim I thought some of you would like to see some pictures the client took while we were installing the overhead.

The boom fits on my forks and we powered it's winch with the battery on the Kubota.

Note the use of one tether line for guiding the log into place. We just attach a little off center and then guide with the lighter end.

Harv, when I first saw those forked logs I was thinking how great they would look inside a house holding the exposed beam of a cathedral ceiling. With a little skill you could have the forks extend up into the ceiling making it appear natural.

Harv,

Nice setup. We need some close up pictures and some specs. What size/length is the pole and how big is the winch? What size are the fork pockets and are they set up for 4" wide forks on 27" centers? That seems to be the most common fork lift setup.

While the client was working on the house this weekend, his better half was down here visiting my better half. Small world isn't it?

Not for lack of trying, three times I started to head out to get my tractor.

Gary, the winch is just a thirty five hundred pounder. The extension pole (center) is two inch schedule eighty and the outer is three inch heavy wall. There's a spacer on the end of the two inch at the bottom to keep it centered in the three inch and another spacer at the top of the three inch to keep the two inch centered. I used two by six rectangular tubing three sixteenths wall for the receivers for the forks. I don't know what the spacing is but my forks are Bobcat and they're apart as far as they will go. There's more about them on my web site under "pole vaulting tractors".

Robert, I've seen that done in homes in pictures. It looks totally kewel.

After lunch I got over to the second location and started whittling out the slot in the big timber for the pipe posts.

Looking good Harvey! I'm like Gary and was really interested in the boom pole also. I'm trying to visualize the finished product - about 5 more post and I think I'll get it. :D Progress here came to a stop after the wet weather hit and I also broke a bone. Not to worry, it's not as debilitating as a finger bone.

Eddie, you don't have to worry about these things for at least another 20 years.

Tooth, some dentist was handing out free corn nuts at H.E.B.

Not to worry, the new tooth will be here in two weeks, I will be fixed before Harvey finger is healed.

How are you securing the top log to the post? Bolted, or steel rope braided? I would worry, but we get huricanes and tornados around here and would hate to see the top come flying off.
