I have access to a free bush hog, and don't really need one, but I was thinking that maybe I could use the gearbox to build a post hole digger, which I could use. My questions to the group are a) is the gearbox on a bush hog and a phd similar or are the final drive ratios a lot different, and b) has anybody else built a phd and if so, what are some other things to consider. Thanks for any input.

I'm sure others will quickly chime in here, but it's probably not a good idea.

From my observation and research, a PHD gearbox slows it down (3:1) and a brush hog gear box speeds it up (1:1.5). So, to use this gearbox there would be two problems. Too fast and under powered. (or dangerous and probably not effective)

If the free brush hog is in decent shape, why not sell it or trade it for a PHD?

Yep, thats pretty much the story. Some PHD may even be 4:1 but not sure.
I see surplus center has a PHD gear box for $199 + S/H

Yeah, that's what I figured, but I asked because I knew somebody would know. Unfortunately, the bush hog is in pretty rough shape. Thanks for the replies.
