Winches Thinking about a winch

Hello to all, I recently purchased a G3033H and so far I'm very pleased with it. I'll be using it to manage timber and various other chores on my 10 acres while not snow covered, and then to manage snow during the other 7 months of the year. But, for the timber I'm planning on adding a 3 point receiver, then mount a 3500# capacity ATV/UTV winch to a receiver adapter (so I can also use the winch on my Jeep). The wiring will include disconnects and switches for safety, etc. I can handle the wiring, but I'm wondering if anyone has run into issues with the stock tractor alternator (rated 50A) and battery (550 CCA) when using a winch?

I'd think about making a hitch for the winch that included a pto driven heavy alternator charging a separate battery or two. This way it would be self contained without depending on your tractors electrical system. My only elec. winch experience is with a Ramsey 8000# on a 3/4 ton truck. On a hard pull it would stall the truck, I guess electrically. Check the "full load" amp draw, it can be very high.:welcome:

My advice would be to keep your eyes out for a used farmi or Norse 3pt skidding winch. Paid 900 for mine, and can't imagine cutting wood without it now.

I have tried different electrical winches and so far have been disappointed. That includes a 12,000 lb Warn. When I get my 8900 lb truck stuck it stays stuck. The only real use is for loading rolling stock up on trailers. Wish you well but I would find out what someone else uses that will do what you want to do.

I appreciate the replies and advice. My winch setup will see occasional use, plus being a 2in receiver mounted unit, it will also be used if needed to get the jeep unstuck. My wiring/disconnects will be "plug and play", but I'm thinkink more towards an aux deep cycle battery. I'll post pictures when it's done.

I'd agree. I don't know how they rate electric winches, I suspect it is a "standing load on wheels on a flat, solid surface".... but every one I've ever seen pales in comparison to a PTO winch. My Igland will pull a 24"x16' log out of the woods with no problem. And the speed at which it will pull the load is WAY faster than any electric winch, since they have to gear the heck out of them to get that fake load rating.
