I thought I should report on how my problem was resolved. Thanks to those who suggested taking it into a machine shop - they were able to straighten it - now as good as new - $36.00.

I have dug a quite a few more holes and so far I have always reminded myself to be patient and follow a routine which includes lifting the auger out before moving on. . . The old guy at the machine shop had as his parting words - delivered with a wide grin - something like - "you do know don't you that you have to pull it out of the first hole before you can dig the next one?"

I bent the drive shaft to my PHD while transporting it. Crossed a deep ditch with the tractor; the auger was forced to swing back when it hit the ground; the drive shaft telescoped out and eventually hung up on the guard on the tranny case -- bent it in a nice curve, both the male and female shafts.
The tractor dealer couldn't help, except to quote out a $300+ replacement (nearly 1/2 the cost of the whole PHD).
Finally took to an automotive collision and alignment repair shop. They got it straight enough that it slides together and only jams a little -- in my mind that's practically a miracle to get telescoping pieces that close to original. Cost was an hour: $70. Glad to pay it.
