The one animal I would eradicate from the planet...

My wife decided it was a good idea for some reason to hatch out a bunch of eggs this spring. Typically we range from 10-25 chickens -- usually one rooster and the rest hens.

Now if you know anything about procreation, you probably know that an egg is more or less equally likely to hatch out a female as a male... and in her infinite wisdom she incubated enough eggs that a 70% hatch rate got us 50 birds.

Fifty. Birds.
Lucky for us, they're right about 50:50 - no worse.

After observing many roosters ganging up on the hens, I lost any sympathy I previously had for them and -

We've been gradually "processing" the roosters. There's going to be a lot of chicken pot pie this winter, which actually isn't a bad thing.

I expect I'm going to need to sell some of the hens as we're swimming in eggs now (I tried out 'waterglassing eggs' last year at it came out great so I've got a couple tubs of eggs in wait for this winter's drop in egg production, which typically happens when we eat the most eggs...)

Roosters are high on my list for this topic - along with featherless bipeds which act in similar ways.

I have never hunted..no desire to kill a defenseless animal. If I want to eat,... I can go to the store.
In other words, you want someone to do your killing for you. Someone had to kill the animal whose meat you buy in that store.

If you keep feral cats around to help with the rodents, you should have them (cats) spayed or neutered.
I'd like to see you catch the feral cats that come around here to get them spayed/neutered. They are WILD. And smart. I've had a terrible problem with skunks in my barn this year so I have multiple traps set. Caught plenty of skunks but not one cat...they do appear on the trail cam I have set up.

But then I also have a good population of coyotes so I don't have to worry about thinning out the cats. The 'yotes do a great job of that.

That's his choice, just as it's my choice to raise livestock, and hunt to put food on the table because I want to know that the animals lived well.

(I just got a notice that the Extension Service is offering a Webinar on "Preparing poultry for winter." I wonder if it includes hints for finding room in the freezer.) :D

Almost all evil man commits against other men started by cruelty toward animals. Using any animal for target practice qualifies.

MoKelly
was it Gandhi who said you can judge a country by the way it treats animals?

I can only guess feral cats are more smarter in your area. We've done it.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like to cull the population of a species due to issues (ironic that I'd have no issue with wiping out yellow jackets isn't it?), but if it needs to be done, I can understand (particularly with hogs, and I'd like to think the animal is used for food of some sort).

My comment was directed to someone who uses a species (feral cats) to help a issue of theirs, but then decides the answer then needs to be eradicated the same species (cats) "for target practice".

End of the day, no matter how you cut it, cats are smarter than dogs ;)

News flash, there are multiple programs run that allows you to adopt ferel cats who have been spayed or neutered to live as a outside "barn cat". The goal is not to have the species propagate to a population issue.

Bigger question in my mind is how many people actually give thanks to that animal for providing food that you may live?

There is a reason why we say grace in our house, and the animal before you to eat should be thanked for IMO.

The practice of trapping, spaying or neutering feral (abandoned domestic) cats and then re-releasing them to the outside world is not only idiotic...it's bordering on insanity...!

The people that practice, fund or sponsor this activity are the ones that need to be euthanized...there is already enough stupidity in this world...

Obviously there is a bias of interest in eradicating one non-native, invasive species over another...or maybe it's the bleeding hearts behind the reason there is no bounty (or organized effort to eradicate) on feral cats like there is pythons in the Everglades.

The problem is too many people have tunnel vision and are incapable of seeing the big picture...

I have 2 of those. Cat got out, jumped in my truck and drove it through my house. This was the last horrific image I saw through the front window.
