My wife decided it was a good idea for some reason to hatch out a bunch of eggs this spring. Typically we range from 10-25 chickens -- usually one rooster and the rest hens.
Now if you know anything about procreation, you probably know that an egg is more or less equally likely to hatch out a female as a male... and in her infinite wisdom she incubated enough eggs that a 70% hatch rate got us 50 birds.
Fifty. Birds.
Lucky for us, they're right about 50:50 - no worse.
After observing many roosters ganging up on the hens, I lost any sympathy I previously had for them and -
We've been gradually "processing" the roosters. There's going to be a lot of chicken pot pie this winter, which actually isn't a bad thing.
I expect I'm going to need to sell some of the hens as we're swimming in eggs now (I tried out 'waterglassing eggs' last year at it came out great so I've got a couple tubs of eggs in wait for this winter's drop in egg production, which typically happens when we eat the most eggs...)
Roosters are high on my list for this topic - along with featherless bipeds which act in similar ways.
