Unc's Misguided is an old name someone came up as an alternative to USMC.. Uncle Sam's Misguided Children..
And in grand Marine Corps style we took it and made it part of the legend...
Here are a few more.
Devil dogs- the Germans called Marines that in 1917 at the battle of Belleu Wood in the Argonne Forrest in France. More accurately it was Tefuel Hunden (please forgive the spelling)

Leathernecks-given to Marines from the revolutionary war for the high collars worn to protect the neck from sword blows during battle, often aboard ship when the ship was boarded during sea battles

Fire fighters- for the way the Marines fought at the Pusan perimeter in the Korean war.

There are more names and traditions. Bottom line, as I was told recently, Marines regardless of when they served, how old they are, race, etc are and always act like brothers/sisters more than any other group.
The comraderie between Marines is something that is hard to explain, but it is seldom missing when 2 or more are together...

I can say that I have done things for a fellow Marine that I may not have done for anyone else.

In the airport, the other day I saw a young Marine in line to eat. He was by himself, I walked up bought his lunch said Semper Fi and God bless, then rushed to my flight...
The only words exchanged were thank you sir, and my reply was to do our Corps proud. The smile I got was beyond words....

2 weeks ago I met a vietnam era Marine in Walmart and we talked for 30 minutes before his friend (a squid, err I mean old sailor) walked up and then we engaged in a favorite Marine past time.. Picking on the squid.. they were both over 20 years older than me, but it didn't matter we are Marines...

Well, I guess you can say being a Marine is close to my heart......

That's fantastic. I'm part of a group like that too - not even close to the level of undying loyalty that USMC people have - but still, it's pretty cool.

I'd imagine that whether or not a Marine ever sees combat, even the time spent in training brings you close together.

What does Semper Fi mean??

"Semper Fidelis is Latin for "Always Faithful". Well known in the United States as the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps (and often shortened to Semper Fi in Marine contexts),"

Taken from Wikipedia.

Hi Jer,
Wasn't trying to ignore, was out taken tractor for a walk...
:tractor:O0o......

Tucker is correct. Semper Fidelis (Semper Fi) does mean "Always Faithful" in Latin.

Taken from the Red-Monster at Parris-Island while studying Marine Corps history and customs and curtesy.

Does that extend to the other branches of the military?

FYI, I couldn't serve...no one would have me!

OMG, 'nother JarHead here?

I always use that but in a different way...when I'm told "ah, the Marine Corps is a department of the Navy", I respond accordingly.

Love the bantering among the branches. Funny how it subsides during a real conflict...
