"Does this look like your terrain?" Yup. :)

@JasperFrank you might try getting a foot long piece of pipe, and figure out what its signal is like on you metal detector, and then turn down the sensitivity to see if you can find pipe and not beer cans.

Do you know for the prior survey that the marker is X number of feet from the center of the road? While I would rely on it, it might help limit your beginning search area.

All the best,

Peter

Typically USGS surveys have “witness trees” at corner markers. Witness trees have a recorded bearing and distance to the corners. Usually the witness trees are at near right angles to the marker location, but not always. The original survey notes would have witness tree information.

Its at least 75 feet from the road. Which is the other reference . This doesn't match anything as it should be 20 feet from the center of the road. I think the road, defining property and easement moved over time, down hill over 90 years. I know my marker is moving. Is it making more property for me? Maybe, sort of? :)

Your county assessors office should have a plat map recorded of your survey and maybe witness tree information.

Markers I have seen move downhill lean as they do so. Your property doesn’t get bigger or smaller if the marker moves.

"Your county assessors office should have a plat map recorded of your survey and maybe witness tree information."

Having done some deed searches at the county level, the recording clerks, all had rolled eyes when i asked about the specific area. And would present a foot wide set of papers for just this one road.
I did ask for the file once, to copy. They gave me the entirety of official files. Legally they were not supposed to do that, but I love living in a small town. They gave me a completely dis-organized mess of documents. I gave them back exactly what they gave me. I could have changed things around a bit, but I'm honest... so.. I didn't mess with it.
It was so messed up, I photocopied the entire thing to reorganize later for my own use.

Wow, just wow. Legal surveys are supposed to be recorded with the county assessor and certified. At least that’s how it works everywhere I’ve lived.

Depending on the state, surveys may or may not need to be recorded. In Illinois they don’t unless it’s a new subdivision.

You need to go to the recorders office in most states to get copies of an old survey if it’s recorded. This is also the place where deeds, easements, liens, mortgages etc are recorded. In your case it should be fairly easy to get the documents if they give you a little help.

You are correct. I was thinking of the county recorders office, but said assessors office. But sometimes both offices have the survey maps.
