Stump Grinding Observations

I just finished grinding 5 White Pine stumps. Here's some pic of the last two. Note these observations.....I used red marking paint to help follow the unground stump and lateral roots. Note also that one lateral root jammed the grinder....taking two hours for this old man to cut it out with a Sawsall and 3/4 inch drill bit. Also not seen is the packed moist dirt that......really packed up inside the shroud....It took me over and hour to dig it out...that was a beech of a job too.

I never have had this much trouble grinding stumps......about 40 in all.... But frequent rains have kept the ground pretty wet....just not muddy.

Looks like the Woodland Mills Stump Grinder. Great unit.

Interesting grind pattern as I haven’t seen that before nor have I experienced what you described. Do you think you may have ground it pretty aggressively or did you grind fairly conservatively?

I grind at 540 PTO rpm and have to feather the progress carefully .....somewhat because the B2620 is at the bottom of the recommended PTO HP for the Woodland unit...i.e. 19 PTO HP.

Looks like you bit off more than YOUR tractor can chew!

Smaller tractors = small bites! AND keep the RPM up!

With more HP, you can tighten up the drive line clutch and get away with bigger bites.

My B2620 has chewed up around 40 stumps so far and to my satisfaction....admittedly at the bottom of the HP scale. It was the large root jam and the packed dirt inside the flywheel shroud that was so unusual. ... Just an observation that could happen to any grinder....I suppose.

Mike, I'm impressed that the Woodland Mills Stump Grinder performs so well with the 19 PTO HP... I know they state 15 - 45 HP, but nice to hear it works as advertised even on the lower HP machines. I like the idea of spraying the line as a visual....

I looked at the Woodland unit about a 1.5yrs ago & if we didn't have some much rock here I would definitely look at purchasing one....

It's never happened to mine and I've ground a LOT more than 40 stumps... Then again, I use it on a higher HP tractor than you do yours...

BTW, I ground 32 stumps in one day with mine, and a lot of them were pine...

It seems to me that it was a freak accident that the lateral root was chopped off and sent up thru the shroud to be lodged in the exit. Probably will never happen again. Making passes in the wet heavy dirt, in attempt to grind lateral roots, probably accounts for the dirt pack inside the shroud.......my speculation anyhow.

Some of my property was cleared 40 to 50 years ago but there are still some ground level stumps in places (as well as ones I am responsible for) however they are mostly Ironbark and as hard as nails so I gave up considering a stump grinder as I doubt it would even scratch them. I am stuck with them unless I buy a backhoe.

What kind of teeth are you running? I’ve had stand-alone stump grinders from veneer and toro and always ran green teeth on them.
