You are correct about the amount of cable/rope on the drum as per the strength.
I took the 150' 5/16" cable off of my MileMarker 10K {hydraulic off of the Power Steering Pump} and replaced it with 200' of same.
You must be a very patient man. Not many winches are slower than a MileMarker.

I'm a huge fan of the Warn 8274, largely because of their 52 to 79 feet per minute line speeds under no load.

That’s cool only limited by length of the chain and the stamina of one’s arm.

Personally I like the old Braden and Tulsa units.

That is so, so very true!
Before I got a large tractor with 4wd, I would get my JD2555 2wd stuck, and call my Bride to come get me and help me tote as many chains and that heavy comalong out to where I got stuck. She really hated it, and was all on board with me spending the money to buy a 4wd tractor. (M7040) I have spent many hours running that comalong, and while it will move about anything, it does it very slowly!

I can hardly wait until somebody brings up using two snatch blocks. Or three.

The amount of confusion about using just a single one is amazing.
When I worked on a whitewater rescue team, we'd do several carabiners to give us 6:1 mechanical advantage to pull boats off of obstacles. Water pressure is amazing.

If recovering an imported vehicle, can you use an SAE snatch block or will metric be required? o_O
First you have to find the little plug on the bumper, remove it, and screw in the towing hook.

I have metric ones for the Unimogs and standard versions for Jeeps and the M936.

I carry one of each in the trailer toolbox since I don't always know in advance what will be winched up on it. Also, these days it's important to check the percentage of contents of vehicles since some "imports" are made in the USA and some domestic vehicles are made outside of our borders.

Equally important, the snatch block should also match the size of the wire rope. For example, the pictured one does not work well with 3/4" cable.

It is an old manual, but I found the Military's FM20-22 enlightening and easy to understand.

As a bonus, If I ever find myself trying to extract a tank buried to the turret, I will know how to do it!

I've had a few different winches since '75. First was a Belleview (daddy of the Warn 8274) that I sold along with a K5 Blazer, then a Warn 8274 that I ran on a few different 4x4's. Gave it to #2 Son for his Cherokee. Most recently a Warn XD9000i in a cradle mount and an added wireless remote. I don't use the winch frequently, so this is a nice setup to keep the winch out of the weather when not needed. There's a little 3500# that is generally used only for sort of a mini crane off the receiver on the FEL.

It makes me laugh a little when I see the spotless 4x4's with everything fastened to the outside for show. There's a Tahoe I see around town that has winch, roof rack, Hi-Lift jacks, Rotoloc cans, traction boards, etc hanging all over it. Makes me wonder if he removes all that crap every couple days to wash it:)

I have Anderson connectors on 2/0 welding cable attached to the fronts of the tractor and Trailblazer, plus 25' extensions for plug & play combos so the winch can be inserted into receivers either front or rear of the Trailblazer. I replaced the steel cable with synthetic and stocked up on soft shackles and alloy snatch rings.
