Anybody else have problems getting the oil cap to align right when putting back on? Mine seems to always cross thread. Is there a trick?

The plastic caps swell with age and won't thread back in. Happened to my 40 year old Stihl chainsaw gas cap and Kubota BX2200 hydro fill cap. Cure is new cap.

With almost any kind of screw on cap or lid, if it doesn't go on easily to start with, I set it on there and turn it counterclockwise until a "click"; i.e., the first threads are then lined up to turn it clockwise.

But that is not to say it'll solve your problem which may be different.

Brand spankin new saw. Just got it last year.
Guess I'll take the saw to the shop and see what they say.

I agree they are a pain. Probably right about the o-rings. I have several tools with with the flip and twist caps and have broken two so far. I keep a new on around because they seen to fail when you need them.

Another complaint I have is the choke lever. Hard enough to get your fingers on it let alone turn it with gloves on.

You talking about those danged new flippy caps? Looks like they seat and seal and then it's mix all down the trousers. :(

I've had a Stihl MS361 with the flip caps (I think of them more as plugs as they have male ends). Have not had a problem with either the oil or gas. Forgot to put the oil plug back in once, but that was me. They have a slot to fit into, as mine are not threaded. Turn them in a half turn, and flip the bail down. I suspect one can misalign the slot ??

And no problem with the choke on this saw. But don't know if all the Stihl are the same.

My 1975 041 Stihl has the screw in plugs, and they have been no problem. My Stihl trimmer/brush cutter has a plastic cap on the gas tank. I was tightening it too tight, and cracked the plastic. Now I just snug it firm.

And don't forget your opportunity to get either mix or bar oil all over your nearly new $200 boots.

Always happens to me on the first day of a 2-week hunting trip, so that one of the pairs of trousers I have been planning to wear for a while is now out of service until I get back home.

Once bitten, I now lift the little ring and try to pull straight out. If it pops off, it was put on wrong.

I've found that the oil cap on my Stihl saws don't want to start if I overfill the oil tank, but if I leave a little space they screw bank on just fine.

Yes its this darn flippy caps. I just removed the oil cap and haven't tried the fule cap. If it's going to be that big of a pain, I'll sell the saw and get something else. Poor design. Whats wrong with threaded cap?

I thought I was the only one. I’ve considered getting another from the dealer, but haven’t made it in yet. Sounds like it won’t help. The gas cap goes on fine, but I’ve spent more than 10 minutes before trying to get the oil cap on properly.

Stihl started using these caps on their blowers and line trimmers also... the biggest mistake they ever made... the cap and mechanisim is a . I just had to buy 2 new caps at $9 each, and they work fine now but I know they will fail with time. They are so bad that it will cause me to stop buying Stihl 2 cycle (and 4 mix) equipment.

I had a lot of trouble when I 1st got mine. The cap mechanism engages and draws up as you turn it into place. Somehow on the 1st fillup I got mine in the drawn up position before trying to turn it -- so it wouldnt turn. What i had to do is engage the slots and turn it 1/4turn ccw to return it to "ready". Then place the cap in with the fold out butterfly handle oriented vertical, hold in gently and turn it til the handle was horizontal. This engaged the dogs and drew the O-ring seal into place. Success.

WOW!
Didn't know they could be such a challenge. Have had no trouble getting them to work just fine. :confused3:

Better consider myself lucky.

Fortunately mine is'nt new enough to have that cap, but local dealer stocks plenty of them as folks do seem to go thru quite a few.

Add me to the list for the same problem on one of mine. I have 2, both have the flip caps, one works fine the others oil cap is a PITA. I did the same as what Spyderlk suggested.

My dealer says its the weakest part on the whole machine when I asked if they had flip caps for my 029. He said that I have to (thankfully) stay with the old style bomb-proof caps. The threads are not the same.

He had a drawer full of the flip caps to sell
