Turn key, starter tries to turn engine. the engine spins about 1/4 - 1/3 revolution
and then a loud CLACKING sound. Not quite the clickling sound from a dead battery.
If I keep the key to start, the starter will spin the engine another 1/3 or so and then
the clacking sound again. All connections are tight. I jumped it with my truck and
I get the same problem. I took the starter out and it spins fine when there is no load.
I was thinking that the starter was bad while under load. Mr kubota wants five hundred
for a new one so I really want to be sure.

OH, when I jumped it my cables got really hot. Too hot to handle!
(I have good jumpers, not the wal-mart.)

Thanks

Try another battery 1st. Take one out of one of your vehicles for a temporary test. I've seen batteries so discharged that they wouldn't crank an engine over even after being on charge for 20 minutes....

Starters generally have an overrunning clutch built into the gear that engages the flywheel. It protects the starter from damage when the engine starts and tries to rev up the starter with the engaged starter gear. I've heard that sound on cars with bad starter overrun clutches. Maybe...

The secret words were "the jumper cables got real hot". Pull the starter and take it to a rebuild shop. My guess is bad bushings.

Has the engine made a conplete revolution? Just to be sure no engine problem (ie: hydro-lock) I'd see if I could use a wrench and turn it completely over by hand, could have a bad injector or something. (trying to be careful here).

It sure could be a starter, but I like to know as much as possible before I spend money.

I'm going to pull the starter today and take it apart. Hopefully some
thing will crawl out and smack me in the face.

Good excuse for not mowing the lawn.

Thanks for you advice.

Had a similar thing happen to a car once, it ruined the battery before we figured out that the starter was bad.
