Angle of attack may make a difference.I can see where this would work in some areas where the ground is soft but the fairly sharp edge of the angle iron would still push loose surface gravel. A rounded edge with a fairly large radius would tend to ride up over the surface gravel.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the angle iron idea. If it works, go for it. I tried it a few years back on my Woods RM72 snow blower with little success due to the loose gravel surfaces I have. The iron pipe was better but not perfect. It might be different with the heavier FEL plow, I may try it when it comes time to replace the worn pipe. It's certainly easier to bolt on a piece of angle iron than split a piece of pipe to fit over the cutting edge.
Keep the plow frame as level as possible.
