Those 5 pounders with metal valve are good.
I have one of those on my Kubota, and two in the house.
Also have a total of 5 - 10 pounders, and one 20 pounder in shop & 2 outbuildings.
Why?
Had a major fire in 1987.

Whatever happened to the soda/vinegar fire extinguishers? They were turned upside down to activate. They were common when I was a kid, now I don't see them.

Interesting question. Google turned this up from an OSHA letter:

Section 1926.150(c)(1)(ix) states that only fire extinguishers listed or approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory shall be used to meet the requirements of Subpart F pertaining to portable firefighting equipment. Soda acid and inverting foam extinguishers operate by turning the extinguisher upside down, which ruptures the cartridge and initiates an uncontrolled chemical reaction to expel the extinguishing agent. Inverting types of extinguishers were de-listed by Underwriters Laboratories in 1969 (paragraph A-2-2.1.1 in NFPA-10, Portable Fire Extinguishers, 1984 Edition, states that the manufacture of inverting types of extinguishers and their listing by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. was discontinued in 1969).

Information from the NFPA indicates that these extinguishers were de-listed for several reasons. One was the diminishing availability of replacement parts and recharge materials necessary to maintain the extinguishers in a safe and reliable operating condition. Another reason was explained in NFPA's Fire Protection Handbook (18th Edition, 1997 pp. 6-377, 6-378), which provides information on obsolete extinguishers. According to this reference, the manufacture and testing of all inverting-type extinguishers soda acid, foam, and cartridge-operated water and loaded stream was halted in 1969 due to: (1) after 10 to 15 years, many inverting type extinguishers failed to meet the minimum test pressure requirements, and (2) container failures due to blocked discharge elbows or hoses resulted in serious injuries to operators.

Ooh, one smart shop tip I forgot about is a retractable air hose reel mounted to the outside of the shop/garage! Best garage addition I made to my tiny garage that is too full to do stuff inside... I just have a harbor freight 50' auto retracting reel but it reaches both trailer axles with the trailer behind my crew cab long bed F350 in the driveway... I need to upgrade the hose but the reel itself is holding up pretty well...

I also mounted a retractable trouble light with outlets on the handle in the eaves a few months ago between the two garage doors, that comes in handy as well but I haven't used it much yet... I put an LED bulb in it so it doesn't break the element if dropped...

" .. must be pulled at an angle to release .." (vs straight out)

No trouble routing the cable with it on the bottom of the tank with that going on.

You must be short. That red door looks about 4 feet tall.

Not a hobbit, but short.

Works fine. I tried an automatic drain years ago but it began to hang up and leak. This is cheap and idiot proof.

I've done the same

These are on opposite sides of the wall next to my man door.

Manual reel ( which I prefer ) on the outside wall....

Short? Standard height walk doors are 6'8" which is what that looks like.

Short. Referring to myself not the door.

The reel looks like it's from Princess Auto.

Yes. Simple, pretty good quality and cheap.

I prefer it over the more expensive quality, retractable ones.

Yesterday, on a show called ricks restorations or something, they restored a big antique fire extinguisher that used a compressed air bottle inside a much larger bottle filled with baking soda.

You pierce the top of the compressed air bottle which forces out the baking soda. Once it's on, it's on, no stopping. Used at airports in the day.

I bought a product at autozone or somewhere for polishing your headlight lenses, like a kit. BMW dealer wanted $150 each.

It took a LONG time but in the end, almost perfect. Do one completely then look at the difference.

You could probably cobble something together yourself, it was 90% rubbing and 10% compound.

Easiest method is spraying some 100% DEET bug spray on a rag and wiping the lenses. Takes about thirty seconds per, and theyæ±*e like new again.

Just curious how long that lasts? I've seen them use wd 40 and it works but does not last very long.

I am a little fuzzy on it now, but I think the big wheel fig extingushers we have outside the hangar doors are just that design.
