Skidding Winches

I bet they "hobble" them, when they take them off their tractor! lol

SR

I would, but my winch has only been off my tractor twice since 07 for a short period of time.
Sounds like red oak is a popular tree, I have a fair amount of them here too and the tornadoes are rare, think nearest one was 20 miles away 40 years ago.

An quite common older design

Now are these working pto winches or a display setup, and what brand and how old? Like to see these old winches in action and the lags on the tires, haven't seen anything like that in 40 years on my fathers tractor, I don't think there made anymore.

I cant figure what a tire would be doing for a pto winch, interesting.
That tire looks like the drive/clutch...maybe?

When I first got my winch I thought it was to fast, now I think it's just right. I'm in no hurry either, that's why I'm sitting here reading some post, but when I get going, I want my equipment to work hard and fast because I'm slow geared with a few loose screws.

This is a re-peat for some, but if you haven't seen it, it's new to you. The old song (I fought the law and the law won), At 1800 RPM, my song goes (I fought the log and I won), I wont show part four because of all the safety police here.

It was a simple solution, you had a cast iron wheel on the pto and a you presses the rubber wheel against the pto wheel. It wasn't the best solution, rain sensitive and the rubber wear out.
It was improved with a massive rubber wheel but it was not the best.

This are working winches, it was mass sold until 3pt winches was common.

This was a much later design, made by what became Igland. The base for the first 3pt winch from Sandvik/Norse/Igland.

Yep that's quick coming up the road. I pull out of the thicket and around trees, kind of selective cutting. I would have backed up the road and hooked onto that log rather than drag it through the mud.

Drove up that far because it was muddy there, the tractor kept spinning and I was getting upset. I got a half bucket full of dirt there too so the tractor stays down, mostly I wanted to see if the winch could pull it, and get it on video for a memento.

Now that log is on display in my new garage, 6"x14"x20' beam.
I have a debark-er on a chainsaw so the mud comes off before the sawmill blade hits it which helps a lot, and now I put logs on trailer and that helps even more

Oldpath, what's the winch mounted up behind your head for?

You have a good eye for details, I didn't think that winch could be noticed. My L3400 doesn't have enough 3 point lift power IMO. 12" log is about max. So to increase lift power without the hydraulic wine, I added a $300.00 9000# winch, it adds another function, but it lifts.

To let the pto winch down, 1st I let the 3 point arms down, then I have the DC winch remote above my head, press the down button till the 3 point pto winch is all the way down, then unwind a little more. When I hook up, have to make sure there is slack in the DC winch cable so when the pto winch start to pull, it lets it dig in the ground, stops the tractor from rolling back over my foot, over the saw, over the gas can, over the cliff.

Love seeing these picture of old winches winches and tractors with the info, they must be around 50 years old thanks. Have you used some of these, now I'll look up Igland winches.

No, but they are very popular among hobby wood hunters with old tractors.
Exept from the rubber wheel model this equipment was made for commercial logging and was of high quality.
I own one of those with rubber wheel but it's not complete, all I have are 3pt winches.

I second this.

I missed that little overhead winch. OldPath being able to pick a 12" log max with your 3ph and winch must mean your winch is really really heavy or something else isn't quite right ??? You have a clever work-around though.

I do think my 3 point is a little bit on the week side, but that's ok, that #9000 Northern Tool winch is on the strong side, plenty of power. The Fransgard winch is listed at 385 lbs. I added on the protective screen + 5 chains + sliders, so it must be around 400 lbs. Maybe the log max is around 16"-18", I'll have to do a measurement sometime.

A thinning job I did last year with my winch. I put in a dead end tractor road last July while it was relatively dry. I thinned the area in the picture behind the tractor.

I cut in late December after the ground was frozen.

This is what it looks like now. I took this yesterday morning.
