side to side counterbalance

My first thought would be a water tank that was removeable and could mount on either side. Easy to drain when not in use.

Ballast in tires or widening the stance of the mower would be the better solution.

A water tank would make the problem worse as the water would flow to the low side the opposite of where you want it.

To answer other questions my toro is a 42" lawn tractor. And I can not mow up and down . One of my slopes has a pond at the bottom. The other slope has wet swamp area. I think I will build it and mount on the back of the toro. Greg
Greg : did you ever figure anything out and if so, could you post some info?

An removable outrigger would solve your problem. I built one for my Husqvarna Rider 155 but for one side only. Its simply a piece of 2" square tubing with a wheel barrow wheel. I mount mine to the mower frame with pins since I don't always want a 20" outrigger hanging out there for mowing in close quarters such as around the house.

Having one on each side might be more flexible for you. I now rarely use the Rider for our very steep dam banks though, having added a Husqvarna GTH26v52LS to the stable. I use the bigger mover now, mowing up and down.

Get a machine that doesn’t require you to rig a counterbalance. It would be a huge pain to shift that weight on every pass. If it is enough weight to matter, it will be a pain to manually manage. Just get a ZT or something designed for slopes as Jeff mentioned. Even a ZT can be dangerous on slopes (man killed just a week or 2 ago on a roll) so be careful.
