Does anybody know where the timing marks are for a 395 engine.
I think I will need these to time the injector pump. Looked all over and could not find any. Of course the manual was of no great value.

Is it normal to have light grey smoke coming out of the exhaust at idle (cold engine)?

Are diesels always that noisy? I'm obviously new to this so I would not be able to tell if it is running correctly or not.

It starts quite easily even in sub-zero weather but never warms up. Thermostat is 57 deg. C, that's about 135 F way to cold I suspect.

If I have not worn out my welcome, could anybody explain the difference between "position control" and "draft control" of the 3PH.
If I understand it correctly "position control" locates the implement relative to the ground and "draft control" maintains a constant force on the 3PH implement. Is there a danger of cross-controlling (the manual mentions something about not working the levers together).

On a 2430 how the *&*(/ do you get to the batteries?

I guess that's enough for now, but I'm sure there will be more to come.

Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'll have to look tomorrow at a 2430, but there may be a plug on the bell housing to look at timing marks. The smoke does not bother me much, especially considering you have the cool running thermostat. several have reported changing this to higher temp with good results. Deisels are noisy, but it you are getting a hard knocking sound, along with the smoke, you may be running a little advanced on the injector timing.

You are generally correct on the lift controls, the draft allows pressure on the top link to raise the lift slightly. both levers control the same valve, it is just one is attached to the top link, If both levers are fairly close, you can get an oscillation as the draft and position levers fight for control of the valve so ususally if using one, keep the other one all the way up, or down (depending which one is used).

Hope this was of a little help.

Bluechip,

Thanks for the info, this helps. Found the plug on the bell housing and I think I found some timing marks there. Lucky it was stopped in the correct position. Unfortunatly there is no other pointing mark or stationary reference, or at least I didn't find any. Well I guess that's at least a good place to start.

Thanks again /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
