Setting Fence Posts Issue

Posts rot at the surface, because this is where oxygen and light can work with moisture for decay. Posts are always wet underground. The top several inches of the hole are the issue.

I set a hollow steel rectangular tube with 1/4” thick steel into the earth and filled it in with concrete to support a 18’ gate on one side and a 10’ gate on the other 22 years ago. It hasn’t rotted.
