Google Farm Bill of Sale I use a simple version - and as others have stated - call the bank the check was drawn on and provide the check information - they should confirm the check is good.

Also HAVE an someone else with you - preferably one with a CHL - in the event the deal goes south you could get the police on the issue.

I buy and sell implements and I always have a back-up person in the shop with me. Theft of tractors and implements are a risk I am not willing to take.

Couple of things you can do.

Google him. Most people leave some sort of trail on-line nowadays that you can use to evaluate a person.

Call his phone company to verify his number is actually working, or look it up and the address it's assigned to.

The bill of sale information for both parties is an excellent idea too.

Make the bill of sale look like an affidavit and have it notarized by clerk of courts or title bureau. This is more or less theatre, but it gives you a chance to get a read on the fellow.

Sad it is so difficult to sell things any more.

You're more trusting than me...I sell firewood and unless I know someone really well it's cash only....I'd never, ever sell a big ticket item for anything but cash....why take the risk?

You can have the money wired to your bank account. Easy as 1,2,3 and I've sold many items this way. I tell them to send the money wire first thing in the morning and a couple hours latter I can check my online account to see. If the money shows up in the account, I call them to pick up the equipement. With anything on a piece of paper you will be out on limb until it clears. Dude can go home to try out the equipement and the engine could go out. If he fills cheated, he will stop the check. Good luck.:D

I've sold equipment on a check and I've bought equipment on a check, both with an appropriate bill of sale. However, nothing moves until the check clears. I must say, I really appreciate it when they hand over a wad of greenbacks instead.:D

The guy came to check out the tractor and of course he felt it was in great shape like I had said. So I agreed to sell and took the check. I did write a bill of sale and checked out his i.d. My wife went to deposit the check and the bank said it will have to sit for 7 days. By this time I had already called the dealer and set up delivery of new tractor for monday. I ended up calling dealer back and asking him to wait till the following monday and offered to send a deposit on the tractor till then. I think he was going to offer the use of the tractor until then but I told him I could barow a mower for now. I guess I should have done cash but I know I don't like carring big bucks with me so I did not. I will let you know if I end up shafted or not. If I do then I guess I should of just took the trade in offer, much less stress!

I sold my BX to a guy from Canada, and was a little tense about the deal too, but everything turned out fine as I'm sure it will for you. The banks are cautious these days about abnormal deposits, and they have some new regulations about that since 911. Like you, I seldom deposit that much money at one time, and I was pretty happy when everything went through fine. We do have to be a little cautious, but we can't stop living, and doing things over it either.

How is your new tractor going to be set up Rob? Curious minds want to know the details. Not that such an upgrade has ever crossed my mind....... :D :D :D

Folks must be more trusting where we live, in the past three years I have bought two tractors and a fair amount of implements and used nothing but personal checks. Nobody has ever asked me any questions about our bank or as far as I know called the bank, nobody has ever requested that I bring cash. The dealings have been with private individuals and businesses.

For the most part we are that way out here too. It's a calculated risk for sure. I still have quite a bit of faith that the honest man still exists.

It is not that I don't want to trust people but I owe money on this tractor. If I did not I would be just an expensive lesson, but I know I would have to come up with the pay off for Kubota and be stuck without a tractor.
Chuck,
I am going to get the b3200 with industrial loaded tires (I hope I like these), the 504 loader 60" bucket with a welded hook, the quick hitch for bucket (dealer has to order and is out of stock till July) and I am getting a factory service manual. I like the way the loader mounts it is nice and clean but when I tested it I noticed a lot of twisting going on in the loader arms. Do you see this on your tractor?

Yep here too. Ten years ago I bought 14 acres of property from an 80 year old with a hand shake. It was the only way he would do it. He thought that was the way things should be. I wrote him a check, he took it to the bank and everyone was happy. I hate to say it but I am just not as trusting these days. I can print some very authentic looking documents on my laser printer. The templates are readily available on the internet.:(

Rob,

I am sure everything will work out fine - also the 7 day term the bank told your wife - its maybe 24-48 hrs at the most to clear but should see the funds in your account now you cannot draw on it right away technically.

On your new 3200 bucket you might want to consider 3 hooks - center and right/left - I wish I did when I got my B21.

May be that way with your bank Carl but here 7 to 10 days is standard on bank checks because of the amount of fraud these days. I agree and it sounds like this was a solid deal and there will not be a problem.

Mine is "generally" 5 days, but the rules are much longer than that. It depends on whether it's a local check or non-local, under $5,00 or over $5,000, etc.:D

Rob, I've had my loader off a number of times, and while I see some flex when remounting it especially, it sure seems rock solid in use. The only time I had any trouble putting it back on was when my neighbor came over to see how easily it went on........ figures, but we just laughed about that. I've used it to it's limits several times with rocks, and stumps, and I really like it.

I like my loaded R-4's pretty well after having them a full year. I have a lot of that black clay based damp soil in my woods, and they have worked fine there while improving my logging roads to be access roads / trails. I wasn't so impressed last winter on any kind of slope with any kind of ice, slick snow cover. There is a 5 ft rise to my oil fill, and often I could get the tractor up, but couldn't use the loader at all. I had to get as far as I could, and then backdrag the snow. I'll probably have chains on it this winter. I've decided not to finish mow with mine for now at least, but I would stick with turfs for that. I'm not sure how much less impact turfs would have when the ground is tender.

I have three bucket hooks welded on short pieces of angle iron on my bucket, and love them. I've attached a picture. The short angle iron gives me a place to put things like steel bars, and I've sure used all three hooks.
You will also like the QA very much. I just got mine, and have used it for the forks, and just to take the bucket off. It doesn't seem to affect lift capacity though I know technically that it does. Actually, I have been able to lift odd shaped things with my forks, and the QA that I couldn't lift with the bucket without the QA because the forks allow me to get the load closer to the pins. Don't do what I did though, and install the pins the way they came..... make sure the greasable ones are back where the QA pivots. Duh!

My local NH and Kubota dealers got taken recently by bad checks, by the same persons. One store got a grainy photo of the individuals and truck they were driving. Photo and story was in our paper the other day.

The bank told the wife that with the check over $5000 you could draw $100 first day and $4900 in 5 buisness days and the rest on the 7th buisness day. I don't feel it will be a problem but you always have to worry.

Chuck,
I know the problem with the r4s and snow as we do a lot of work with skid steers and they suck, My turfs were great in the snow and great on the lawn but hated the load capacity of them. I had to over inflate them and always woried I would ruin them. I also would like to spend some time collecting fire wood with this tractor and hope the r4s will be a durable tire. I am going to search for some chains for the rears before snow flies.
