seeing issues

I'm into the world of tri focal glasses ,I seem to have focus problems but I can't say if it is my vision or if my welding helmet doesn't sit right .When I go to start an arc and tip my helmet down it always seems to high ,by the time I get it positioned I loose my rod control and causes frustration and messy beads .Would an auto darkening helmet help,I'm kind of cheap.Any thoughts would be appreciated.

These days you can get an Auto Hood for about the same price as a regular one.. And yes it makes all the difference in the world for the problem you describe.

I don't have much faith in those videos that someone was paid to make. It may be a dandy but I'd look elsewhere for information like a welding supplier that sells to welders and knows first hand what welders like.

I have a cheeeeep Auto Darkening I wouldn't give you if you lived next door. I wouldn't treat a neighbor like that. No more than I weld anymore I couldn't see spending big bucks so that was about $40 or $50 down the tube.

I took my old helmet to my welding supplier and they replaced the broken head band and lens and I'm happy now. With the old style I drop it down, wait a few seconds for my eyes to adjust then do it to it.

If I did a lot of welding, you bet I'd buy a high dollar good one.

I had same problem. The eye doctor made up a pair of glasses called "occupational lenses". They're ground to focus at a chosen distance, in my case about 24". They make them to focus at any distance you want. I had mine made at the optical shop in Target, didn't cost as much as regular bifocals or transition lenses. I wear them for everything from working on the computer to welding, to the wood shop. The only time I wear my other glasses now is if I'm driving or really need to see well for distance.

With that in mind, I would forgo the battery power lenses and look for a solar powered on only. Usually in the same price range, but doesn't require you to buy a set of batteries everytime you want to go weld a piece of angle every couple of months.

You might try replacing the inner clear lens with a magnifying lens, it works for me

Sounds to me like you need to adjust your helmet for height. Window / opening is not in your direct line of sight. Generally there is a little clip with 4-holes on one side or the other of the helmet just for this purpose. Pick a hole in the center of the clip, insert it over the little stud. Make sure the height of the head band is correct for your head also!

If you're not seeing real clear, maybe use only glass lenses, no plastic at all.

That's what I have in my thrift store helmet. Time to bump up my prescription again.

Do they make round magnifiers for the old school goggles I use to braze and burn?

I spoke to a purchaser at work today ,the cheap ones the guys or gals on the production welding line buy from her are about $89.00 after tax I'll have a chat see what they are like and how they like them ,the top line ones are about $300.00 she said.

As another with "aging eyes" (read Trifocals), part of the problem is being able to look through the right "focal". Many times my head just will not tilt enough to see up close. I found a stick on magnifing strip a walmart, cut it and put a small strip across the top of my Rx safety glassed. Now I can look up and see something close. Good for welding, working under a car, and shooting with open sights. You can get the correct focus ground into any area af your glasses, but this was a cheap test to see if it would work. I only did it on my right eye, but it makes a world of difference.

When I found them they were with the "reading " glasses. I haven't looked lately, and wallmart is notorious for either discontinuing or labeling something as seasonal, and their seasons don't always match mine. Might try one of the drug store chains, or who knows, maybe even the eye doctor:laughing: They were in a hard clear plastic case, before I cut them, looked like the part circle of normal lined bi focals.

You know, you can cheat on alot of things, but you only have one set of eyes. I bought a nice $250.00 hood and i never looked back. It has a HUGE viewing screen and my eyes thank me for it. I bought a Jackson Halo X HeavyMetal .... LOVE IT. iT HAS REPLACEABLE FRONT LENS COVER TO PROTECT FROM SPLASHES, AND REPLACEABLE INTERIOR LENS COVER ALSO.

a SET OF BATTERIES LASTED OVER 1 YEAR.

MAN, i hate that caps lock button. I need to pry it off my keyboard
