Seat Safety Switch - SOLUTION

   / Seat Safety Switch - SOLUTION #11
I was loath to permanently disable the safety switch, but definitely need a way to stand while using the forks and when hitching the FEL implements. Trying to press down on the seat with one knee while trying to control the hydrostatic pedal with the other foot was not fun. So, in desperation I came up with this hack and it has been working perfectly.

A slight improvement might be to add a tennis ball or similar to the centre of the bungee, so that when one sits down one is given a definite reminder that the safety switch is not engaged.

Nice simple solution

This situation is most irritating. My brand new JD 570 lawn mower will shut down the blades if I stand up or get off the mower. No buzzer and the engine remains running. My Kubota M6040 will buzz for ten seconds or so if I stand up or get off the tractor. After ten seconds the buzzer stops. Nothing has shut down, nothing has turned off. I've been appropriately warned and I continue on with whatever I am doing.

This dramatic difference must be due to some noxious government regulations.

I would be REALLY UPSET if the tractor turned off or the PTO shut down - every time I stood up and/or got off.

On my tractor, if there is noone in the seat, the engine stops. My understanding has been that this is to try to protect the driver from being run over by the tractor wheel or by an implement, in the event of him or her falling off the tractor.

However, if one tips the seat over forwards, the engine doesn't stop and the PTO remains active. In other words, it takes a definite and considered activity to put the tractor into that mode.

On my Kubota just tipping the seat up isn't enough. You also have to set the parking brake. It would be nice if they included a temporary override button. Push it and get a few minutes without worrying about the engine shutting off.

I get that stall situation when standing to see where a grapple is grabbing or leaning far enough to the side to line up SSQA.

One option I've pondered is to wire a step-on switch/mat in parallel with the seat switch so that either one would keep the tractor running.

Placing it on the footboard would require the same operator presence as the seat switch.

OK, perhaps a simple enough solution to consider.

Splice in a pair of wires to parallel the circuit and wire to a suitably located switch that is key activated if you want ultimate safety.
Otherwise a simple 'on/off' would do for those annoying occasions that require your butt off the seat.

You would then have it both ways.

How about a switch like on a boat that is tethered to you and kills the tractor if you get thrown ?

The first day that I got my tractor home I wanted to use the backhoe. It's rather difficult to sit in the drivers seat and BH seat at the same time so I wired the safety switch down temporarily. That was over 2 years ago and I haven't changed it yet. I normally wear my seat belt so the chances of getting thrown off are low.
