I know this is supposed to be about tractors, so just pretend it's for a tractor part.
You folks are good judges of this and I don't want to get sucked into a scam. I have a tanning bed for sale for $550 on CL and I received this message. Do you think it is a scam.
I copied his response from the e-mail he sent me. What do you think? I never ran into that before. Any ideas.

" i really appreciate your response and consider this item sold.
am very okay with the price and condition as stated in your advert i promise to give addition $50 if you remove the advert from Craigslist completely,so i will be rest assured am in hand of this item.

I will pay you as soon as possible tomorrow with USPS MONEY ORDER OR CERTIFIED CHECK,so i,ll be sending the payment to you via FedEx or ups and it will delivered.

So you need to provide me the information to facilitate the mailing of the payment

Full name on the check ..................

Physical address to post the check ...................

City, State and Zip Code ....................

Home & Cell Phone to contact you ..................

Note :I would forward all your details to my secretary to make the payment out to you fast and the payment will be shipped to your address via FedEx next day air service, and i will take care of the shipment of the item, as soon as you have the check cash, i will send my mover to come down to your address and pick the item, thanks and hope to hear from you as soon as possible.

Regard Lewis "

I get similar CL scam emails also. Their text NEVER names the "ITEM" for what is really is.
Now when I post something for sale on CL, I state in my last sentence to type in the response subject line box, "XXXXX" (whatever word or phrase you want to use). If it isn't on the subject line when it shows up in my mailbox, it doesn't get opened. Cyber robots haven't figured that one out yet..........

Anything I've listed on craigslist over $100 or so, the scammers are out. If you get more than one email from them, check their actual email address. They may use the same proper name, but their actual email address changes each time. Most of mine were gmail addresses. They want to buy without even looking at or wanting to know more about the item.

The check will show up but "accidentally" be for 2 to 5 times the purchase price. They will want you to send them the difference.

It seems most of mine are Gmail as well.
Or they just send you a note.
"Is it still for sale". That's all, no name or any expression of interest.
I do wonder if they want you to respond so they can get your email address?

And the scammers from the Craigslist USA seem to be moving into its equivalent downunder called Gumtree.
However they don't show great intelligence everything they advertise is listed like $5,200 AUD or AUD$5,200. Now I'm sure everyone in the USA understand if something is advertised on Craigslist is does not get the $us on it just a $ price. same here. Immediate giveaway of overseas scammer.
I enjoy just taking up their time and leading them on.......gets to the stage they are almost begging you for the vital details in the end.

USPS MONEY ORDER OR CERTIFIED CHECK

this = scam

its reported all over that people are passing bogus MO and Cert checks in the mail. they pick up item BEFORE the check is declined 3 times by your bank and returned to you. youll have to pay all bad check fees PLUS you lost the item.

i sell stuff on CL all the time amd its always CASH. One ebay its always PAYPAL only. no checks and definitely no money orders or postal checks.

Total scam; offer to buy useen for set amount, never mentions what the item is, has a secratart, offers MO or Certified which are the scammer's best friends.....

Total scam. They can bulk e-mail that message to anyone selling anything, if you check the message, it's all generic, it says nothing. They hope one in 10,000 is fool enough to go ahead.... Don't be that person.

I have found that a high percentage of responses are scams. In the craigslist ad, I clearly state to call, not email. So, I don't even respond to the emails. Every once in a while I do get an email that sounds legit, so I respond and tell them to call me. If they are sincere, they will call. No call, no further contact.

It seems most of mine are Gmail as well.
Most of mine have been from hotmail. Either way, I generally report the account to the email provider so that it gets shutdown for scamming.

I do wonder if they want you to respond so they can get your email address?
Probably 30% do that.
