*How it really worked here.
Private agreements between individual customers and haulers before the city got involved.
Hauler A $16 a month for 5 bags a week for limited service appliances and furniture $10 each item.
Hauler B $14 per month 6 bags a week for limited service large items $5 extra per item.
Hauler C $12 month No limit on bags per week and no extra charge for large items such as furniture and appliances...
I guess it's a moot point, since you live outsidde the city and said you don't have trash pickup service at your house.

You also mentioned something that you would consider burying your garbage. You would have to watch what you bury, unless you want to mess up your neighbor's well water.

The answer to your question regarding illegal dumps vs burning trash is kind of moot, since both are illegal here.
It's never surprising, but always disgusting, to see the rationalization people will use, just like any other criminal, to justify their illegal behavior.

1*All the municipalities that go through this do it in public via a bid process.
2*Anyone can comment on it.
3**Everyone gets a lower price if it's mandatory because all the responders to the bid know how many guaranteed customers they will have.
4*The problem comes in with people who don't like the democratic process where the majority rules.
How it plays out here.
1*This only applies to the 12000 county residents who reside inside the city limits.
2*The other 36000 county residents who don't live in town have no say in the matter although what happens in town has a bearing in these 36000 citizens.
3*I'm still waiting on that to happen here.
How do you get competing bids when there is only one hauler because the cities mandatory policy has driven the competition clear out of the county?
4*12000 peoples actions affecting the consequences that the other 36000 folks have to live with is not majority rule.

So, 24,000 county residents were not enough to keep at least one other hauler in business while 12,000 city residents were? Yeah, right.

According to the 2000 census

Washington County Ohio Population - 63,251
Marietta Ohio Population - 14,515

Interesting. Those 14,515 people certainly have a lot of clout to put all but one trash hauler out of business. Also makes me wonder where some people get their population statistics.

O.K. We're re-hashing at this point. Anyone have anything new to ad?

:p Re-Hashing or Re-Trashing?

Here they pick up everything but batteries and tires. My youngest son goes around each week and gets all the batteries he can and takes them to the recycler for $5 each. He has more spending money than me.

My house is in the city limits, so I have weekly city garbage pick up. Wouldn't have it any other way!
1*Cost is less than $20 month, paid as part of the water/sewer bill.
2*County residents in this area have the option of trash pick up from one of three county approved contractors.

1*Your mandatory 20 dollar cost is higher than any of the following voluntary trash pick cost listed below.
Hauler A $16 a month for 5 bags a week for limited service appliances and furniture $10 each item.
Hauler B $14 per month 6 bags a week for limited service large items $5 extra per item.
Hauler C $12 month No limit on bags per week and no extra charge for large items such as furniture and appliances.
So I have to ask why have mandatory trash pick up controlled by the city?
Charged on the water sewer bill stinks.
I got into that raw deal when my Mom died back in 1989.
There was 3 houses on her place in the town.
Naturally all 3 were vacant so no trash was being generated there but it was 3 trash bills for no trash being picked up.
Contrast this with the property next door 1 charge for trash picked up.
2*We had 3 haulers in this county too but after the city started forced pick up we only have 1 hauler now.
I don't like mandatory auto insurance either, but at least those regulators don't dictate what insurer I have to deal with and eliminate all my other carrier choices.
