Rounded off drain plug

The problem with most pipe wrenches is the wide body of the wrench. The jaws are narrower than the body. Due to the wide flat bottom of the tranny pan and the short 1/2" length of the plug head, the body of the wrench will hold the jaws down far enough that they barely have any bite on the plug.

short wrench / long pipe

Agree; the trick is to not use too big of a wrench with a lot of bulk. Maybe a good quality 12-14" American made wrench with sharp jaws (not a wobbly or dull import).

^^^^ Also a piece of wood could be inserted between the pipe wrench and the pipe to help hold the wrench in place. If necessary a floor jack could be used to help hold up the pipe so that it doesn't bend. Now that pipe wrench is not going to slide off.

Years back I had an F510 Deere front mower with a plug situation like this. I've taken a number of bad plugs in tight quarters out before but this one was the worst. It took a couple hours, I rounded it off and still couldn't get it out. I finally did and welded a new nut on the bottom. The space was so tight almost nothing would fit. Even then, I had to grind the nut down to get the plug back in. These engineers should stick to trains.

That may all be true,..... but look at the amount of threads showing also.
The OP can put the pipe wrench jaws on the plug threads, instead of the smaller, and now totally butchered 1/2" long plug head.
The threads have a much greater surface area for the pipe wrench to grab.
This is NOT a machine shop necessary fix!

The way it looks to me, I'd try a basin wrench, backed up with a crescent wrench for leverage. The basin wrench will reach up/onto the threaded part of the plug, and the crescent wrench on the shaft of the basin wrench might give enough leverage the loosen it up

the drama is killing me........!!!!

so what happened...did the pipe wrench run off and marry the bolt extractor?
will the welder in the shop down the road run off with that hussy vise grip....hmmmmm????

don't leave us hanging....

The bolt extractor set cornered the pipe wrench and now it's in hiding, the adjustable wrench went underground and the vise grip threw a fit and refuses to let itself be used anymore.

Still working at it. I hate giving in so I go work at it a bit every now and then. Valve stem on one of the tires is rusted out along with the rim around it and that tire happens to be low. So need that fixed before I drive it anywhere on the road. New tube is on the way.

A new tube may be a short term fix, but a new rim is the long term fix.

If you are widely ambitious, you might completely sandblast the entire inside of the rim, apply a layer of resin, with several layers of fibreglass cloth to the general rusted out area, feather to smooth the repair, and paint the entire inside of the rim with two coats of two part marine epoxy.
I did this, with two rims that were no longer commercially available.
Labor intensive, but it did work well.

Kando: re the plug. Chances are your pipe wrench is too large, the fit is not set properly or the pull is in the wrong direction. There's is a lot of information on use on the Internet.

Suggest a smaller steel pipe wrench with a piece of pipe over the handle for extra Leverage.

Looking at rims from miller tire and yesterday's tractors. Cheaper through miller but the center disc has a larger diameter center, probably too big.

Tried the smallest pipe wrench I could find, 8 inch. Cheap jobsmart one though. Looking into a trip to Lowe's to look through some better quality ones.

Maybe try a good quality 12 inch wrench.

What diameter rim do you have? Did you check eBay? I purchased a 28 inch Ford loop type 2 years ago. If you want I will look up where purchased and price at that time. Miller is good, but they are usually not lowest price, unless shipping costs are a factor for your location. I ordered new bolts at the time as well. You only need the rim not the center disc, correct? Not power adjust, right?

12x28 rims. Current rims on the tractor are power adjust, however I don't really need the same type. I'm planning on replacing both eventually to normal rims. If the current center discs can be used on a normal 6 loop rim that would cut the cost.

No wonder you could not move that plug......an 8" cheapo pipe wrench?
Both Lowe's, and HD have decent pipe wrenches.
If you use a 12" or 14" wrench, you might also need a piece of pipe as a cheater.

Problem with a larger wrench is the size of the jaws, more out of contact with the plug than on.

Understood !!

The day will come when you wish you had those power adjust rear rims. You can find new or salvage ones to replace yours. Tractors that have them are considered more desirable.

I have the old original Ford style power adjust rims on my 850, which are no longer made. I thought about replacing the centers and rims due to the corrosive filled tires rotting the valve stem area. I'm getting by for now with doing nothing, but when the time comes I think I will try to restore the rims per several threads on this site. Patch the rim, and re-drill the stem hole in a new solid location away from the repair. Then prime, paint, remount, and enjoy the adjustable rims.

Not quite sure how the power adjust rims work. Remove a stop and hold the brakes while in gear? Never tried it and not sure if the current rims are even capable of it now. Might be rusted.
